It's late March, 1953 and 4124 has "mid-train" helper duty today on Train 921. The location is Chorro siding on Cuesta, just West of San Luis Obispo, CA.

Just F'ing around

Received a care package at the N Scale Rescue.  A bunch of Bachmann Plus F units in B&O.  Got an ABA set to run reasonably well, but as expected they are a bit clicky.  Replaced a couple of axles which helped, but I reckon I'll be ordering more.  If I can find the brass tubing I bought before I moved, I might be able to repair the cracked gears.  But for now it's just another project punted down the line.

It took longer to mask than to paint, but I got the patched areas done on 8814.

In honor of Lee @wm3798

A first gen Arnold F unit from the earliest days of N scale.  Still runs. (obviously custom painted).

What I've been working on....

The chain to the left past the debarker (center) is new. I have most of the building done to cover the debarker and most of it will be open on the side you will be viewing the sawmill complex from. The log lift and chain on the right was finally finished with a sprocket/wheel added to the left side so that the chain could at least look like it is continuous.

Carriage above is a work in progress as I write this.

The roof will lift off to see the interior but the mill isn't right at the edge of the layout and is up on the upper level so probably spending a lot of time on this for detail that won't ever be seen. At least I'll know it is there. I'll work on the rest of the interior at a later date.

I looooove logging as a modelling subject matter. My family history includes a ton of it. This is something I will follow with great interest!!

Masking like that is a ton of work. Well done! It looks awesome.

U18B:  They made those FPs in NP, and I wanted one back then.  Never got one, just a Penn Central FA.  Probably just as well, as the FA looks a lot better!

The fact that yours still runs, 50-60 years later, shows how well they were engineered, regardless of the appearance issues.

The way they recessed the mechanism, to hide the oversized wheels, the FA doesn't actually look bad with a modern version.  Not "right", as the trucks are too big, but not really bad.

Just got on a red-eye flight back to New England after spending a few days in Evanston, WY for the 2024 Evanston Free-MoN weekend. Definitely was nice being back after 3 years, especially with some modules this time around. Wickenburg Canyon was once again a success. Plus it was great catching up with the few of you that attended.

Ran some trains and took poorly lit iPhone pics. Need to work on my lighting and find a temporary background to eliminate the stereotypical messy basement pics...

Also printed out throttle holders for my walk arounds. No more Velcro...

@Cory Rothlisberger - What is a Megatech X6000?

And for background, you can get bulletin board paper for classrooms that has a cloud pattern and glue some to some foamcore or Gatorboard and just clamp it in place.

Please tell me you'll be A) posting those interior detail plans on your website and B) modeling a plywood mill next?
