EMDs are fine, but what about Baldwin Roadswtchers? And low nose RS-11s, RS-36s, and the D&H'sRS-3ms, Alco C-424s, C-425s and C-430s. DO not forget the C-636s and M-636s.

I could go on but you get the point.

@davidmbedard

My suggestion would be a US style SD40 without Dynamic brakes. If road specific I would prefer Soo Line and CNW, but a shell without DB would be very useful.

SDP35, UP version in my case. Should be a drop fit on the Atlas SD35 frame.

I would love to have a GP60 phase 1 demo.
There were only three.... and they went to CSX.

But other roads tested them.

Rounded contours are unique.

Before I jump into the -2 line of shells.......what other straight 40 series of shells should I consider?   Im thinking maybe 38s, 39s?.......SDP40fs?   What are you guys looking for?   What do you wish was available?

I might suggest a CN SD40U rebuild (6000-6028). The nose and cab make them a fairly unique prototype. A little out of my era, but I think there may be a few folks interested in getting these.

The SD40-3 rebuild of CN's SD40's as well. I'm not too familiar with what changes they made externally, if any, but they all had dynamic brakes added and the class lights were visibly plated over. These would be Connell Leasing GCFX 6030-6079 (later dispersed with some getting WC markings, any others going to smaller roads), KCS 6600-6639 (many went to GTW later), BNSF 7300-7339, and NBEC 6900-6910.

The earlier mentioned EMD SD40 without dynamic brakes would get my vote as a good candidate for consideration. The big road that had then new were C&NW (30), IC (6), GTW (30), MoPac (90), and SOO Line (21), and the Atlanta & St Andrews Bay and Gainesville Midland each bought a single w/o DB.

I would like to see an HR-616 shell designed to fit the Rapido C40-8M chassis. I don't have dimensions that I trust for the HR-616, but I do have a shell I bought off shapeways that, if accurate, has the GE about 18-24" longer but the truck centers close. For me, a slightly longer HR-616 is a fair trade for the privilege of a drop on chassis. Right now I'm all about those CN SD40 shells, but when the time comes and if you're willing I can provide a C40-8M loaner for you to test fit and I'll back my interest with purchases.

A CP C-424 for the LL chassis would also be something I'd support... the 4244 in lock4244 is in honor of CP 4244, the first locomotive cab a crew invited me into. CP had three versions of them, and many were dispersed after 1998 to shortlines (Apache, NBEC, Ottawa Central, WNYP to name a few).

An SW1200RS (CN & CP) for the Kato NW-2 chassis. I stocked up on NW-2's when MBK was blowing them out thinking one day they'd come in handy for an SW1200RS (also sitting on a clutch of Kato Algoma Central SD40's for an MBK blowout). I have some of the LL SW8/900 and SW9/1200 and though they do run and pull well, the Kato is a far better and quieter running model... and I have nine of the Kato's laying around so I vote for them. Again, I'd be happy to send you an NW-2 loaner for test fitting should the time come.

I wouldn't bother with the SDP40F, for at least two reasons:

They are a -2 locomotive, even though they don't say so, so need the -2 trucks, and
Kato already makes them.  I suspect most people who want one bought it when they came out.

If you do decide to make them, an Atlas SD50 chassis is quite close.  I kitbashed a pair many years before Kato made theirs, using the SD50 chassis.

My vote goes for the SD40 without dynamic brakes. Mopac had those and UP inherited them at the merger.

SD39 and probably also a non starter GP40X that fits the Kato GP50 frame. HT-B truck frames.
