Old Minitrix/Model Power engine parts break down.

I also have parts breakdowns for the LiL Donkey 0-6-0 switcher, 0-6-0 Switcher Steam Locomotive and Tender, Fairbanks & Morse Road Switcher Diesel, F-9 "A" Diesel and GE U-28 Diesel if anyone is interested.  Ok I added them all!

That F9 was the loco that came with 3 or 4 pieces of rolling stock and a caboose when I got my first N scale “Aurora Postage Stamp” train set which I requested for my 16th birthday … that was 50 years ago!

That loco was incredibly well made, and only gave up the ghost about 10 years ago.  I still have all the parts, and the rolling stock is still trundling along.  Great memories.

Those locos were pretty much indestructible!  They were mostly metal (chassis, gears, etc. I'm curious what caused it to give up the ghost?  Only things I can think of is the brushes or the commutator wore down in the motor.  Or maybe the electric pickups in the wheels?

Pete - it was the motor … stopped working.  I removed it from the chassis, and applying power to the terminals didn’t help.  The brushes were reduced to wafer-thin discs of graphite.

I stripped the chassis down and I used it as a free-rolling dummy unit for a few years.  Last winter, I subjected the shell to surgery and, armed with a few prototype photos, converted it into a B unit sitting between two Rapido sound-equipped FP9A’s pulling The Canadian.  Two weeks after completing the conversion, serendipity struck … my hobby shop had just put a used dcc-equipped Intermountain B unit on the shelf (perfectly matched CPR burgundy) so I snapped it up.

These days I usually just run the three factory locos in consist.  Occasionally I’ll put my fabricated B unit in the mix for some variety, but to my eye, an ABBA consist pulling just 10 cars looks like overkill.

For me, it’s nice to see that my original Postage Stamp set is still useable, and providing enjoyment, 50 years down the road.

And oh, one other thing - I also still have the box that it came in.  It’s holding an Aurora Postage Stamp N scale Greyhound bus set from the same era (it too still works - I set it up for the grandkids to run around just a few weeks ago).

I'm glad you kept it Dwight, even if it is for nostalgic reasons.  As far as the motor goes, brushes or a replacement motor could likely be found. I know I have couple of old Minitrix motors.
