ESU "Select" Dual EMD 12cyl 567C (FT) 73483, 73883, 73383

I had this idea that I might they to load this file in my modified N scale LL SW1200 with an ESU 73800 board installed, so that I could occasionally MU a non-sound SW1200 with it and have the second prime mover in this file represent the second loco. This way I can more accurately capture the sound of two locos, even though it would all come through a single speaker located in the sound unit. It would appear that, instead of assigning the second prime mover to F8 along with the first (default setup), I could probably assign it to its own function key. This way I can keep the second prime mover off if running the sound unit solo. Has anyone done this? Also, I'm curious if, with the two prime movers running, the volume has to be turned down at all due to output limitations of the speaker. That would be a dealbreaker.

That’s an excellent idea.
The 44 tonner has two prime movers 1 & 2 assigned to F8 and they run simultaneously but there’s no reason the second one couldn’t be mapped to a separate function.  I changed the speed of one slightly so they didn’t sync up and you can discern two distinct engines running. Volume wise it doesn’t over drive the 8x12 speaker. It’s just multiple sounds all at once like having the engine, bell, horn and flange squeal all happening at once.
It’s cool on startup when you hear one then a few seconds later the other one starts. I may try that with my TR4 set.

Thanks, Jim! I'll load this file later today and see how it goes.

I haven’t looked at those particular files but I suspect you’ll find sound slots 1 and 2 by default on F8. You should be able to uncheck #2 on F8 and enable it on your desired function key.
I’m looking forward to see if it works.

OK, I'm happy to report this a huge success! :D I think it will be very convincing to have a non-sound unit MU'd to this loco. In fact, it's kind of hard to tell the sound isn't coming from the non-sound unit. Especially if it is MU'd to the cab end of the sound unit, as that's where the speaker is.

I was able to map prime mover #2 to function 13, which was open and available. Interestingly, prime mover #2 still won't fire up unless prime mover #1 is running. However, it will stay running if PM#1 is shut down. I'm still playing with the sound speed setting of PM#2 to find the best setting to both compliment and contrast PM#1 just right with no "phasing" effects. Incidentally, the prime movers in this file do quite well with sound speed changes, in that there's no odd digital noise/artifact that shows up (when slowing the speed down as far as 85% anyway). I have found other ESU files that have digital noise/artifact start in immediately with even a slight change in sound speed both up and down, so I'm really happy that this does very well with it! :D

73883.

I'm so pleased with the result, I'm now curious as to if a LS5 non-dual prime mover sound file could be edited to have a second prime mover. I have a small fleet of non-sound N scale SW1500's that this would work really well with, as I don't want to change them all out to sound units.

I think you could use the LS5 non dual prime mover sound file to create a second file with a different name and assign it a separate function.
I wonder if you assigned sound slot 1 to say function 13 as a second occurrence if it would run separately since it’s started at a different time or try to run the same as occurrence 1 and fall into phasing?
Just typing out loud here.

That's what I'm thinking too but I still haven't figured out how to accomplish much with regards to sound editing LS5 files. I was just looking and I'm not sure how to proceed. I once managed to change a compressor in another file (one from an entirely different sound file), but dang if I can remember what I did!

Bill showed me how to drag & drop a sound file into a library but like you, I don’t remember how. I do remember it was extremely simple though.

I was just able to take a prime mover from the sound library (!2-567) and, using the left arrow, was able to put it into a sound slot (31....wouldn't go into 30). Not yet sure if this will work or not as far as throttling up, etc. I can't seem to do anything with the existing 12-645 prime mover in SS1 though. Can't seem to use arrows to put it in the library.

BTW, who is Bill?

Ah, skytop35! Of course!

Paging @skytop35

Can a LokSound 5 sound file be edited to have a second prime mover placed in a separate sound slot and, if so, can that prime mover's sound speed then be adjusted?

Any help would be appreciated! ;)

There's a chance I may have figured it out. Going to try loading it into my loco and see if it works.

This would be cool to figure out for permanently mated consists.  I have a pair of CF7's that will always be together, 1 with sound, 1 without.
