Announcing: The Nickel Plate Archive

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to officially announce the existence of a project @jdcolombo and I have been working on for a few months now: The Nickel Plate Archive.

https://archive.nkphts.org/

The NKP Archive contains thousands of NKP and NKP Adjacent images categorized by location, equipment type, and more.

If you are a Nickel Plate fan, or even have a passing interest in it, it's a great way to spend a bunch of time when you're supposed to be working.

Enjoy!

WOW! Really impressive piece of work.

Thanks to you and @jdcolombo for the labor and expertise to put this together.

And also to the NKPH&TS for making the archive public.

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

Thank you gentlemen for working on this! I have a few things lined up to do on the Bellevue layout and this will greatly help with it!

I don't follow NKP, but I must say this a valuable resource for those who do.

A well designed web site.   Well done.

I am thinking you misspelled Bloomington, IL.
Pretty cool overall.

Thanks, everyone.

There's a lot of cleanup work to do on the data associated with all the images (and there are drawings in there, too).  Sometime later this fall we will begin hosting a series of "archive parties" via Zoom, where we will be going through all 16,000+ items in the archive and correcting (and adding to) data.  I'm going to try to post those sessions here for anyone interested in joining the fun; you don't have to be a member of the Nickel Plate Road Historical and Technical Society (NKPHTS) to join in.

We'll probably start this process with geographic sets of stuff, with cities in Ohio first.  Once we've done all the geographic sets, we'll go back and check on other groupings (like engine classes).

I do hope that any of you interested in the NKP who are not already members of the NKPHTS will consider joining the Society.  We publish a pretty darn nice magazine four times a year - full color, 32 pages, with tons of information about the NKP and its connecting roads.  The cost is $45 per year, which is just a bit more than one decent freight car in HO or N scale these days.  And three times a year we do a e-zine on modeling the NKP (the NKPHTS Modeler's Notebook).  And every month there is a newsletter that goes out to members with short articles on some historical aspect of the NKP - the latest was on how mail operations were done out of Cleveland.

In case you're interested, here's a link to where you can download a full past copy of a past NKPHTS Magazine (Fall 2015):

And here's a link to where you can join the NKPHTS:
