Walthers N Scale Pole Barn and Sheds Kit

The N scale version of the Walthers pole barn and sheds is now listed on their website.  https://www.walthers.com/pole-barn-and-sheds-kit

It should be a useful model since structures like these are just about everywhere.

It looks like it might be decent kitbashing fodder. It would take two kits and a bit of splicing to represent the pole barn housing my layout.

The listed footprint dimensions don't seem to jibe with the model pictures. The large barn appears to represent one that's 30'x42', which would be 2.25"x3.15" versus the listed 3.69"x4.88", which I think are not cut-and-paste from HO dimensions. Interesting.

CORRECTION: After counting ribs (12" spacing), it appears to be 40'x54', so a 3"x4.05" footprint. The 40' dimension makes little sense. Pole barn builders shoot for dimensions divisible by 3, since that's how the material comes. Other dimensions mean long cuts and waste.

Yet another "I wish it weren't so small, but I'll take it" situation.

Does it come with an Amish construction team?

All the pole barn builders in NJ are from Lancaster, PA - the guy who graded for ours was a Mennonite who had a driver - he was allowed to operate the skid steer - but not allowed to tow it.

The term "pole barn" can be a generic term for any engineered structure that looks like the large building in this kit.  In 1983 I had an all steel Butler shop built for my farm that was 40-ft by 50-ft, and it looked very similar to the Walthers "pole barn."

And while Walthers depicts the buildings in a city setting, in the area of the country where I live, they would be much more likely to be found on a farm.   ;)

Depends on local codes, and commercial versus residential. Commercial tolerates lighter framing and lower standards for roof loading. The latter is dictated by latitude, the deeper you get into snow country, the more robust the roof trussing needs to be. Farm buildings are the lightest of all on both, demonstrated pretty much every spring by the number of post-frame structures blown away in storms around here.

The ribbed steel siding is becoming a lot more acceptable in residential use. Our summer cabin is not only post-frame, it's steel paneling top and bottom. Our main house in town has a steel-paneled roof, and we plan on the same for our guest house. The price differential between asphalt shingles and metal has been diminishing in the last 10 years, with steel the more substantial material now that it's powder-coated rather than primer and paint - or galvanized. I have a story about dealing with old galvanized paneling.   :(

Metal roofing has been common on residential structures in fire-prone Western areas since the 70s, at least.

The one I owned was 40' x 60' (measured on it's outside corners, give or take a couple inches), so there were some made to that sort of dimension.  Mine was originally built in the  70s, according to what the seller told me (IIRC). General lines quite similar to the kit, but only one overhead door.  All steel framing and truss, steel siding and roof.

Overall dimension...well, it could be that they fudged the 12" rib spacing and it is a bit larger.  Also, Walthers pretty consistently measures the biggest thing they can find on the model- which would be around the roof, rather than the footprint. That would add several scale feet- and get closer to the 3.69 x 4.88.

Useful for modern modelers who need a small auto mechanic business and some garden sheds. I am not that modeler, but I can build the 1920s version with a couple of DPM modulars.

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

It's like that here in eastern Iowa as well. This past week a local woman under the influence of what would seem to be narcotics drove into the side of a local legion, damaging the fire department connection as well as peeling back some steel siding. Was told they'd call us when ready for our repair, waiting for the Amish gentleman that does the work to get a drive up in a day or two.

They seem to do a good business in building residential garages around here as well.
