Well ... the first batch Southern received (#3201-3254, blt 1972-1975) certainly would have been delivered in "gold".
The second batch (#3255-3328, blt 1978-mid 1979) kinda straddles the switch to "dulux".

So to your original question:
I think either/or is the answer.  ;)

Mark

So I decided to follow my own "best practice" when it comes to choosing numbers for models: start scouring the web for pictures to see which one I can find the best reference for. So far 3327 seems to be the best documented.

Can you get a good view of the underside? I'm curious if it's got a proper frame modeled.

I just pulled the pic from the Scaletrains FB. Hopefully they’ll put out a video covering everything in detail.

I'm glad these are a thing, but no Conrail is a bummer. I think everything but the BN would not fit my 90's time frame.

Rapido recently announced a C30-7 in HO so I hope we see that in N. But they didn't include the C30-7A. Come on guys. DO IT!

I was thinking about that today. While IM did the as-built units, you'd think CRQ would be a no-brainer. Except... it'll require tooling that I'm bet will be expensive to do for the trucks. I wouldn't expect them to half-a$$ it and not do them right.

So, given the amount of unique tooling in this run (admiral cabs, spongebob cabs, high hoods, etc...) I'm not surprised they're deferring that particular can of worms for a future run.

It just gives you time to save up :)

Personally, I'm kinda glad they didn't do CR in the first run: I still have my fleet of IM ones to finish upgrading. I'm ok being patient.

They’re preproduction, so I’m hopeful that they’ll be much better on the model.

Holy Sh*t! That's effing GORGEOUS!

Look...there's lettering on the separate truck brake cylinders!  Three little brackets under the arm rest (with bolt details on the brackets!)  Look at the details on the headlights...and on the CLASS LAMPS for Hell's sake!!  Horn bells?  eh...but....look at the diameter of the handrails!!

And the frame, brake, truck details...!!

Almost makes me want to buy one just to look at the finest SD40-2 Snoot I have ever seen, even though it's nowhere close to my layout's era...and change out those HUGE N-scale couplers to MTL True Scale Couplers....N-scale couplers on this are an insult to it....

WOW Scale Trains...now for some GP-7's, 9's and B-units!

A sure winner, trend setter and money maker I am 100% positive!

Kato, Intermountain and any brass I've ever seen, pale in comparison and look like toys.

Cheerio!

Were the 8000 series UP engines geared faster than their other engines?

Yup...they were called "Fast Forties" and were geared to fit between two fast DDA40X's (Centennials) also with higher gearing.

I have a few N scale Scale Trains ET44AC's and Dash-9's, and they're all really nice - some of the nicest runners I own, absolutely up there with Kato and above Atlas IMO. I expect that these will be just as nice.

This group of road numbers is the same as their first run of HO SD40-2's, at least for NS, and I have nothing bad to say about their HO scale offerings either.
