Heh.  Did they forget one of the Holiday on Ice cars?  "Wait for me!"  ;)

Seriously, maybe there was a mechanical issue on the HOI No. 103.

I figure it was a bad order..

Still got a chuckle that it ran as a 5 man extra crew vs running on the next day's #351 which was listed prior to the extra
Unfortunately the consist list didn't give times to know how far #351 ran ahead of the extra.

We ARE talking Penn Central here.. so

And here is the competition in the form of a former PRR B70A scenery car.

So... Question from someone 60 years later... what was Ice Capades / Holiday on Ice were they hauling around in those baggage cars (with a lack of crew cars)...

(My browser is flagging Capades as a mis spelled word)

They were two separate Ice Skating traveling shows ( Sort of like the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circuses before they joined forces.)

Those box cars would have been carrying lots of ice (just joking) and mostly sets, props and special lighting equipment for the shows.  The shows were usually over 2 hours long so lots of set changes to perform.

Almost joined one of them while I was in college.....
