hard to be sure looking at pictures on-line, but I like Cast Iron best, then Night Mission, and Thunderous a very distant third.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

I like Thunderous. You have pretty low ceilings so the lighter color may help the layout and room feel bigger.

Because I mentioned the importance of working from photos, I finally pulled these all together in a way I can share.

Those are a bunch of reference photos I took that I've been using I'm going to keep adding more as I find them from past trips.

Can't help but notice that CR blue is not on the list of options. What is this sorcery  :?

Night mission imo... higher contrast with the scenery above verses the two other options that aren't CR blue..

To further your confusion, I like (in this order):

1) Night Mission
2) Cast Iron
3) Thunderous

Hope this helps (doubt it),

Not this time. I couldn't handle the uncanny valley of this again.

I recall seeing a similar loco - possibly the exact same one, but in a different paint scheme - at Edaville when I went there for a model train show back in the '80s.

Cast Iron or Night Mission looks pretty good. Thunderous is a bit to distracting from the mute colors of dead season.

Night Mission brings out your greens a bit. Cast Iron is nice too, and more neutral.  Personal preference I'd say.

Thunderous is too light.

I like night mission the best also.  But hey, I'm color blind.

Ed - thanks for the detailed response about your ground covering.  I am going to give this a try - sculptamold does leave a rougher surface, and I have been kind of stuck on using static grass, but your ground foam mix looks really good and thanks for stressing the importance of layers.  It will take me a couple of weeks before I can try this, but it won't be much longer than that and I'll report on my progress.  If I can replicate what you have done I will be quite pleased.

Inspiring folks to give the dead season a try is one of my favorite things. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

Please don't get me wrong: I do think static grass has its place. There are plenty of tall grasses around, and it's great for that, but take a look at this album:

And this photo.

If anything, looking at my own photos, I think I need to go add more green to the scene.
