Question about containers

A standard container has a width of 2.4384 m / 8 feet.
There are containers with excess width, eg. 3.00 m / 9.8425 feet.
Can these container be transported by rail and if so on what kind of car? Maybe a flat car?

Flat car, most likely... Plate H (I think that's the correct one for double stacks, too lazy to check) is only slightly wider than the 102" wide 48/53/etc. North American domestic containers at the top. If you look around for images from Everett, Wash., you can find examples of extra-wide Boeing Co. containers being moved on flatcars.
