Conrail GP15-1 circa 1990

It was a nice rainy day today, perfect for starting on my GP15-1 project.  I'm starting with a DC unit, road number 1683.

I have installed an NCE decoder, swapped in Kato wheelsets, and airbrushed the trucks and fuel tank dark grey (as a base for weathering).  I also brush painted the walkways grey/black and end handrails white.

Sunshades and plows are next!

Sunshades (Gold Medal) are now attached.  I know the BLMA set comes with separate tracks, but I had the Gold Medal set on-hand.  I also used a dark grey wash on the grilles and intakes, but looks like I should hit them with some black for better effect:

This is an older Atlas release which came with plain pilots, but the real units had front and back plows.  I took a chance and ordered a pair from CMR Products (only $4.50) and they are really nice 3D prints:

Progress this weekend includes blue paint for the sunshades and signal box, plus panel line treatment with Paynes Grey oil paint:

The grey treatment looks great, and not a color I would have thought to use for panel lines. Is the technique a simple thinned oil wash traced into panels?

Great work overall, I've been following with interest.

Thanks @milw12 !  I borrowed the color idea from our very own @tom mann , and I have also seen it used by aircraft guys.  It is a dark grey with a touch of blue, so it is a little less stark than straight black.

And yes, I used mineral spirits to thin out the tube oil for the wash.  The slow drying time lets you clean up any stray "tide marks" with a q-tip.

But don't try this over flat/matte paint - the glossy/smooth surface allows you to remove any extra paint.

While the panel wash continues to dry, I had a chance to JFRT with the "naked" chassis  8)

... and then got back to work grunging the walkway with dirt and rust pigments, and Burnt Umber rust under the battery boxes - maybe needs more but I don't want to overdo it:

This 1990 reference pic shows some heavier rust on the boxes is appropriate:

Sploosh!

Those things got pretty crusty as you got into the 90s so it's definitely be a fun project.

With the panel line wash dry, I reassembled the body shell and attached the cab signal box, and then got busy with rust and dust pigments.  Going to hit some of the white lettering with some rust next:

Almost done!  I have the shell back on the chassis, and gave the roof details a Burnt Umber oil wash.  Need to let that dry and then hit it with some pigment for that "brake shoe rust" look.  I should also scuff up the white handrails with some pencil...

Looks good - the cab roof needs a lot more rust and grime

Done!  I quickly put this unit into service, switching one of the new Atlas chlorine cars I picked up at the LHS:

Great work.
Would the fuel tank and trucks still be that black?

Valid @wazzou, I think I have some shadow issues going on...  I will get some closeups on a neutral background...
