Intermountain SD40T-2 w ESU 73100 and Soberton 8x12mm speaker

Tehachapifan installed an ESU 73100 and 9x16mm speaker in an Intermountain SD45T       https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=43396.0

Yesterday, I did the same except with a Soberton 8x12mm speaker in a homemade enclosure that runs about 18mm x 6mm x 9.6mm. I used 0.010 plastic sheet since it was what I had. It is not my most elegantly made speaker enclosure but it was a Monday. I just wanted to see how it would sound.

I found the 73100 slid in without any trouble and the sound was loud and clear. The horn was impressive. For those of you with the new Rapido Dash 8-40CM, it was as good as that. I took a video but it doesn't reflect the reality so I will try again with a new setup when I have time in the near future.

Nice install.

I have to say that going by the photos, the plastic you used for the enclosure sure looks thicker than 0.010" (unless you laminated 2 or 3 thicknesses of it).  0.010" sheet styrene is very flimsy.

This looks nice.

It's a shame that we can't get these decoders here in Germany from ESU directly, only from ESU LLC...

I have done seven of these so far with the same items. You need to add the MARS Light to the nose. Makes the signature model. For the MARS. I drilled out whatever plastic IM used for the nose lights and made Light channels out of Fiber Optic, used a small LEDs and shrink tubing.  I slide the LED - tubing assembly over the fiber optic light pipes. This way the shell can be removed is necessary.
Thanks for posting this. SD40T-2s always always peak my interests lol

I have 4 more on the workbench for this. I will try to remember to take a few pics and post.

It does look thicker in the photo but I double-checked the Evergreen packaging which says 0.010" I also mic'd it and it measured 0.011."

I didn't laminate it. I did this more as a curiosity to see if the flimsy 0.010" would assemble into a decent enclosure. It is harder to work with in assembly than 0.020" for sure.

Besides having it on hand (I couldn't find any thicker plastic in my box), I used it since I didn't want to have to do any shell thinning for width. I already have one FVM GEVO shell in my "Kill" credits because of my ham-fisted efforts to thin its shell.

You're right and thank you for this. The lighting need to be done right on these.
