Bachmann GG1

He clearly says that they do not pick up electricity, which is fine.  But if the pans are "sprung", will they follow a wire, if one is present, or are they like Kato's, designed to be up or down, but not "operating" in between?

Yes, unlike Kato "for looks only" pantographs, Bachman ones are fully spring and equalized.  They will follow the catenary wire and will not tilt or lean.

They are not quite as nice looking as Kato, but still look very acceptable.  Kato pantographs are made of stamped (or photoetched) and folded sheet metal, with plastic shoe, while the top half of Bachmann ones is simply made from bent wire.

And those should still be available from Bachmann (but who knows for how long?).  There is a limit of 2 per order. When I need Bachmann parts I usually wait for their email with a discount code for parts orders. Then I order the parts I need, plus couple of those pantographs.  They do fit the Kato GG1 with minimal modification.

Well, that was over a year ago that I looked at this and I didn't install the Bachmann pantos on Kato. Just did some eyeballing and test-fitting. But whatever is needed will be fairly easy. IIRC, the holes for insulators ob Bahmnann almost perfectly match the holes in the Kato shell.  So either reuse  the Kato insulator assy, or make/get some.  Then single screw in the center to mount the pantograph.

I don't actually need the pans now.  I have a bunch of Overland Models Little Joe pans that work for my Kato electrics.  But it's nice to know that, if Bachmann ever makes a model I can use, their pans will work.

It arrived today. Only two days from Micro Mark and it is the sound value version so it isn't a type O or anything wrong, just very unusual I would think when most are selling it for $199, this was $132.     Anyway It's a good runner. Pulls my 14 car Broadway Limited easy up the 1.34 %. It would not pull my 15 heavy weights plus four mail cars and a caboose without some slipping a tad but, i find that it has so much traction that i think it would burn up the motor before too much slipping would happen.  Overall i'm pleased with this engine. It just doesn't fit in with my layout due to no cat wires but I'll keep her.
     I do recommend this engine. Haven't seen a Kato yet but I like this one.

What was the MSRP on these?  Wasn't it around $500?  So, just as predicted, the street prices have really gone down.

Not sure about the MSRP but most are selling it for around $199. I got a deal I'd say.
