Bachmann GG1

Is there a thread on the Bachmann GG1 with sound ? Just wondering about it's pulling power and overall in general.  Can it pull the 14 car Kato Broadway Limited up a 1.34 %.

While it might not answer your specific question, Spookshow has a review. http://spookshow.net/locos.html

I'm also almost certain that this model was also discussed here. Just search the entire forum site for Bachmann GG1

Railwire member peteski bought one in order to do a technical review:
https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=40509.msg502998#msg502998

According to him, it's a "pretty good model (both in level of detail and in running quality)."

It is true, I bought Spookshow's model he reviewed, but my opinion in the second post (linked to above) was based on his review. The model is still sitting in its jewel box - I have not done my typical technical review yet.  I did give it a quick once-over when I first received, and I was impressed (and also noticed quite unusual mechanism design).  One of these days I'll get back to doing my review.

Ok, I'm sold. Sounds like a winner.  Thanks for that reply. Now what to do with my 5 Rapido Gs.         I have to keep my very first one that mom got me for Christmas 1973.  None are set up for DCC.   I'm sure you all noticed my large photo is gone. Had my daughter come over and take care of that.  I can design, machine and build just about anything but when it comes to a pc, forget about it, my idiot light comes on.

I can speak to the GG-1 I slightly modified for @gkoproske , I just don't remember whether it had sound or not. Non-sound is the same model, just different electronics, so ANYway...

It could pull stumps, but only after a tweak. Problem was the coupler(s) and therefore the pilot truck would lift under pulling stress, uncoupling from the train. Solved by thickening the frame above the pilot truck hold-down springs to increase the spring pressure. I used 3M "gray" foam tape keeping the red backing intact, but 0.050-0.060" of anything would push down enough to prevent coupler lift. After modification it pulled a 25-car train up 2%, 30 cars needed a helper.

Just ordered the Tuscan 4913 from MicroMart, on sale $132.99 for the DCC sound value version. Couldn't turn that down.  I had to cross check the stock number to make sure they didn't screw up for that low price and come delivery day i open up to a straight DC version.  Been there done that and then you pay shipping again to send it back.   You know what they say, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. However I'm about the world biggest pessimist.

So if they listed the loco with sound and with the sound part number... and you got a non sound loco??   And they send you the wrong part number???

I would push them to make it right.  Even if it is a typo.. (I dont view Micromark as your typical struggling LHS trying to make ends meet and give a pass on it..).  ~Ian

No ,. I haven't received it yet. I only ordered one but at such a low price for the DCC with sound version I had to check out the stock number to be sure the correct engine was listed right. In the past I ordered from a place who had the stock numbers wrong and I got the wrong item due to their mess up.  You know how it is when you order something. You receive it all excited and then upon opening it you find it's not what you ordered. Then you send it back and wait some more and only to find they don't have what you ordered in the first place is not in stock. Then it turns into waiting a few months till the correct item comes into stock.
This is my luck. It happens to me more then it should and this is what causes me to be such a pessimist.  I'll let you know when I receive it and how it is.

That particular part number brings up all sorts of wacky listings.  Just checking a half dozen dealers when I searched "Bachmann #65352" I see-
N GG1 sound value- with sound value description
N GG1 sound value- but description says DC loco
N GG1 (DCC equipped)- says it is DCC, but no sound mentioned
HO GG1 but with N scale in description.

And that doesn't count wacky descriptions on ebay and such

But according to Bachmann, it is indeed a "sound value" equipped loco-

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

Well i'll find out when it gets here and if they sent the wrong one and not the one that IS listed as "Sound Value" I will raise some cane with them. Yep, listed as 65352 sound value, $132.95.   I'll post the outcome when it arrives.     Oh yeah i just looked. They have the sound value green G listed at $162.95, the silver at $173.95 and the black PC at $177.95, all sound value.  Funny, it's the same engine different paint.

Spookshow's site says "The all-metal pantographs are sprung and moveable (you can either have them all the way up, or locked down flat). "

He clearly says that they do not pick up electricity, which is fine.  But if the pans are "sprung", will they follow a wire, if one is present, or are they like Kato's, designed to be up or down, but not "operating" in between?
