Great Christmas present from Chessie System Fan

Aaron came over for Christmas.
We talked about my future layout (the Plywood Plains is no more-- disposed of in this recent move).

He said.... Let's start.

So he took his very rough sketch from a couple of months ago, got a bunch of wrapping paper from mom, and proceeded to draw a 1:1 layout.
We used prints of fasttracks turnouts.

Here he is drawing a curve.

And here is a happy dad.

Here is a first draft of the layout (dotted lines still more work to do).

Who could ask for a better present than working with your son- who is a great modeller.

Yeah!  Great to see/hear about this.  Aaron, you're ding your dad proudly.

Great to see the pic of the two of you (I still remember fondly our Orlando dinner together after the NMRA Natl Train Show in 2017).

That's awesome!!

My favorite recent projects have involved my dad so I know the joy it can bring. It's a great thing.

Aaron: "Mom, we need a lot of wrapping paper and oh don't come downstairs!"
Mom, thinking: "Wow, I must be getting a ton of gifts."

Looks like toy you guys have curve easements perfected. One thing I wish I would've addressed better on my layout...although they can eat up a bit more real estate.

Yeah.   Aaron is the one who has read scores and scores of layout articles.

Where he got the idea for the curve tool, I’m not sure.  It’s like a PVC batten that’s 8’ long.   I think he got it at the hardware store.  Makes natural easements.

Maybe he’ll post more on that.
I’d never seen that done before.

Dad is learning new things at almost 59.

I don't know where he got it, but draftsmen used those for years (centuries?) before everything went digital.  That's one of the advantages of spline roadbed.  The easements come naturally.
