Trainworld Bachmann Sale

Trainworld is having a sale on Bachmann items.  If you want the crappy "Santa Fe" 4-8-4 it's down to $69.99 at the moment.  I think that's their standard sale price on these but still cheaper than most places.

ALCo S4's are $49.95 (one is $54.95) as are GE 70-tonners.  The standard sale (blowout) price but still cheap.

Of course, their shipping prices push the total back up a bit...

If they'd put a little something behind that shell, they'd have something.  The new drive is actually quite good.  I had one that I was working on to build a WM J class Potomac.  But the boiler shell hasn't seen a rework at all since it was introduced in the early 1970s.
I'm tempted to get one, but it's a little out of my focus just now.

And the S-4 is a good price... I need to get a new decoder board for mine, but the part alone costs $45 from Bachmann.

I need to consult my loco info spreadsheet and find out if the Bachmann 4-8-4 is sized right to convert to a C&O Greenbrier.

The answer is... Nope.  The Bachmann N&W J is closer.  Which is good, I have 5 of those stashed for now dead conversion projects and the C&O only had 12 J-3/a/b class locomotives anyway.

If you want a NYC P&LE S4 or one to strip and re-paint, they are now $39.99 at Trainworld.  Others are still $49.99

The unlettered, cream GE 70T is also at $39.99.

Tempting!  Do you know if Train World charges tax outside of NY?  I know most e-tailers do now but some might not have caught up yet.

Their shipping is a bit on the high side.  Over $90 it's $13 shipping.  I want to get other things to make the shipping worthwhile.

No tax on my order and the shipping was $10

I haven't ordered from them in a couple years, before the sales tax change hit so I don't know if they charge out of state or not.  And, yeah, their shipping is a bit high.  last time I ordered I bough 5 or 6 locomotives so the $20 shipping worked to be less per item.  $13 on one or two items bites.

If they had GE 44 tonners cheap, I'd get more of those. I can paint them up as Arcade & Attica 110 and 111 and sell them.  But those are starting to get scares.  Bachmann hasn't produced any in a while.

Confirmed no tax outside of NY state.  Just placed an order for two of the S4, PL&E and ATSF.  Squeaked in at a penny under $89.99 so only paid $9.99 shipping.  Two pennies more and shipping would have been jacked to $12.99.  I was going to buy some other ancillary items but the increased in shipping would have been more than the item!

Should be here tomorrow if they ship today.

I used to go to the store many many years ago when I was living in Manhattan, NYC.  Took my bicycle across the Brooklyn Bridge.  Those were the days!

Those who have ordered from Trainworld, do they e-mail you a tracking number when they ship your order?  It's my first order and just checked online by logging in and it says the order was completed today at 11:28am but that's it.  So does it mean it has shipped or not?

I've made 4 orders with then.  Never a tracking notice.  They say you can track your order on their website but I don't remember if I was able to or not.  Also, if your order changes (Like something is out of stock so they ship fewer items) don't expect it to reflect on any thing you can find on the site.  I had an order of 7 Bachmann H4 2-6-6-2's that got downgraded to 5 because that's what they had left.  To this day, the order on their site still shows 7 with the original billing amount.  They billed the right amount but nothing shows that anywhere.

Thanks John.  There was no tracking number when I logged into my account just now.  Pretty archaic in these times!  Seems like MBK beats them by a mile on this.

What you say is not surprising though as when I used to visit their store in Brooklyn and purchased retail, it had a "mom & pop" kind of operation.  Don't get me wrong.  They had a lot of stock and a lot of staff but it didn't feel they were into the technology available to them.

So I'm assuming they really don't have real time inventory?  Not the actual number of each item like MBK but when something is out of stock, they still had the Add To Cart button?  That would suck if you were ordering a loco and a pack of MTL truck (not the 10 pack) and the loco is out of stock.  $10 shipping for that single pack of MTL truck!!!!   :o

In the checkout process they ask you if you want to back order out of stock items but they clearly state that you will be charged shipping again when they are back in stock!  That is so out of the norm!

Hope my two S4's are not out of stock!  Of course I won't know until I open the box I guess.   :?

That's one reason I don't order from them unless I "have" to.  But they've been good about shipping in reasonable times and packing well.  It's just a bit of a crap shoot if you'll get everything.  It's only bee the one time that they couldn't cover my order so I didn't do too badly.

You know guys, you could (like back in the 20th Century), call them up using that old-fangled contraption called a telephone, and speak to their lovely order-taker ladies with heavy New York accent, and place your order that old-fashion way.  Who would have thunk you could still do that?   :D

Then you should be find out whether the items you want are in stock or not.  That is how I usually order from them.  8)  I enjoy hearing the accent too.

Hey Peteski, that's the Brooklyn accent.  You-know-what-I'm-talking-about?  :)  Good idea about the phone and if they have access to real-time inventory that would be the incentive to place the order via telephone.  This is the first time I've mail ordered from them since I've moved away from the area decades ago.  It's usually a bike ride or a short drive in the past and no high shipping charges though you do get the almost 9% NYC sales tax.

Update:
I logged in this morning just for grins and they do have a shipped date (today) and a tracking number (USPS Priority since I live in the next state).  So all in all not bad.  Though there's just one more box to check off, what's in the box?   :D

Update 2:
I got a text that they charged my CC the full amount so it looks like I'm getting both.  :D
