Atlas SD60E First responders

Received my Atlas SD60E Honoring First Responders locomotive. Looks great and runs smoothly without any slow speed jitters. Flashing ditch lights on both sides, lighted number boards. Sound quality is also very good. Not super detailed but looks very acceptable to me. Overall a happy camper and another great Atlas model.

Do the front and rear ditchlights flash? That is a nice looking locomotive!

They flash but not alternatingly like Scale Trains. The ditch lights both front and rear flash in a dim and bright sequence depending on the direction of travel.

Both ditch-lights (their "light pipes") are probably illuminated by a single LED.

Got excited for a minute thinking they went back to the CW40-8 design that had the separate boards for the ditch lights.

That's... disappointing.

That's... disappointing.

Considering they are an NS specific model and NS always has alternating, flashing ditchlights.  Yes.  At least they have front and rear ditchlights.

My UP SD60 barely ran when I got it. One of the pickup wires was detached from its axle wiper and the truck towers were absolutely packed with white grease (thus spewing everywhere). And during the process of resoldering the wire, I discovered that the axle wipers are blackened the same way the wheels are, so I had to get in there with a screwdriver and clean all the blackening crud out of the axle dimples. Yeesh.

Anyone have any good photos of the an SD60E in the standard NS scheme? Hard to imagine both SD60E’s and accurate NS Dash 9’s would both arrive the within the same month!  :o

I’ve got two pre-ordered. I can post pictures once they arrive. It may be a week. Waiting for my supplier to get them and ship to me.

I'm pretty underwhelmed by the lighting (both front and back). The LEDs are much farther away from the light conducting plastic in the shell than they used to be, and as a consequence the headlight, backup light and number boards are barely visible (or at least that's the way it is with my DCC-Sound version).

Happy that I don't really need much in the way of motive power lately.  For what we're paying for, at least I expect better.  I'm sure I'm not alone though.

Anyway to extend the light pipes in the shell?
