More 3D printing fun. Yesterday Craig @CRudeME also brought a batch of UP switchstand lanterns he printed on his new resin machine. I drew it about three years ago, and (of course) Shapeways rejected it. The detail is astounding, pardon the iPhone's relative lack of macro focus:

I was able to muster steady hands for this result:

Starting to get back to the layout after a long break over the summer. I'm attempting to figure out the arrangement of the town/industry side of the layout. Buildings are npt my thing so its taking forever, but I'll get there.

Finally making some progress on the new layout room. I have approximately a 10’ x 20’ area in my workshop to build the layout.  I have probably 2/3 of the tables left over from my last layout and except for one table I am not reusing any left over laid track.   So other than my staging yard I have pulled up basically all of my original track.  I have a pretty good idea of how to use my existing tables and what new tables I need to build. Lumber is sitting on the floor so hopefully next weekend I can start building a few more tables and close the gap. My staging yard table is 8’ long with 12 tracks on it.  I plan to add another 3-4 feet in length and another 2-3 tracks. My son kept referring to my train parking garage!!  I chuckled and told him it was called a rail yard.

I am thinking double mainline with a large passenger station, a nice rural area with a small depot, and a handful of small sidings for businesses etc.  I need to build a table to accommodate my Walthers roundhouse and turntable.

Yes. Craig's response when I sent him the file was, "You're crazy!"

You know, I always turn up my nose at those Life-Like E8 unit (and I have a bunch) because of their odd noses, but in that Frisco paint job I don't really notice.  They look great!

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Stucco, so it should appear sort of smooth, at least from a scale perspective. The horizontal striations I definitely expect from FDM, it was printed in a normal orientation, upwards from the structure foundation. The vertical ghosting? Got me.

Embrace the ghost , imagine there was a recent fire and the wood is checkered , a little Burnt Siena and a well placed fire truck should work , no window trim needed .

….when one of you loco's in 3 or 4 unit consist missed the last DCC command to stop. :

I had thought that perhaps someone found a Russian 4-14-4 and had gotten it running again............then it did the same thing to the track that it did the last time that anyone ran one of those things.

Another 3D project came to fruition today, Norfolk Southern tie gondola. They are rebuilt cars built from Seico bulkhead flats.

There are 2 versions of this car on the NS a 5'4" tall car (this one) and a 4' tall one. The 4' car is about done and that'll be test printed soon.

Update.  Built the pen for the display locomotive.  Park officials are pleased with the results.

I'm going to add a raolfanning deck behind the tender, and some signage for the "Railfan's Park"

Working on a set of Frisco E8's as stand in power for Lowell Smith's Texas Special cars until I can find a set of E7's to strip and repaint for a reasonable price.  I did do a little work on these:  painted the horns and trucks, filled in the lead unit pilot, added decoders, etc.  They look good with Lowell's cars.  I do have the correct decals for the E7's courtesy of Circus City Decals.  Matt is a great guy and will do anything you want for a very reasonable price.

The KATO E7s that come with the TCL set will be your best bet, if you don't mind waiting.
