I friend was installing a decoder in an Atlas RS - 1 and there were sparks and a melted truck. Does he have to get a new one from Atlas?  As an alternative, he has available a FB -2 LifeLike (metal frame) or a RS -3 Atlas as donors. Thoughts?

I’m pretty sure the RS-1 and RS-3 trucks are interchangeable.

It depends on the version of the RS 1 and 3, are they China built atlas models or are they the older Kato built Atlas models.  The trucks are not the same in the different builds.

Many, if not all, Atlas RS-1's come with sideframes with plain bearing journal boxes rather than sideframes with roller bearing journal boxes.
