BN Cryogenic Reefer

Anyone know of a decent starting point, or something that can be kitbashed to make a fairly accurate version of this car?

Micro Trains 70050? Not sure about the roof though. The MTL car is definitely not a raised roof like the BN prototype.

There are the Walthers 70’ cryogenic reefers.

Either the MDC/Con-Cor/Red Caboose 57' Reefer.. or the Red Caboose Beer car... either way, you'd need to stretch out the cars by 1-2 runs on each end.

My knee-jerk reaction is use one of those sixty foot Red Caboose Tropicana-style cars.

I'm thinking either these or the Atlas/BLMA Bx-177. Issue with the RC cars is they lack the diagonal bracing on either side of the door.

Other hard part is finding the actual exterior car length, as everything I've found shows interior length. Well except for the link I posted, but be nice to get multiple sources to show the length.

There are the Walthers 70’ cryogenic reefers.

I have a few of these, however these aren't remotely close to the BN cars.

FWIW, the 1970 Car Builder Cyclopedia has a diagram for BRCX 5300 which appears to have the same exterior dimensions as the BRMX series 5200-5299 which is what I believe the car your looking for is originally from.

The drawing shows 61' 0-1/4" over the roof sheets and 60' 8-1/8" over end sills.

ORER 1998 shows Outside length 67' 8" -- Outside Width 10' 1".. Extreme Width 10' 8".. Extreme Height from Rail 15'6"

Inside Length: 54' 9"

I think one of the 57' reefers or the BX will be your best bet.. No matter what, you'll have to stretch the car.. (Adding to each end it Looks like.)
The Atlas BX-177 you need to remove the bottom skirt below the door.  Red Caboose Beer car, you'll need to remove the bottom skirt and add the angle ribs.

The 57' reefers, you just need to add the angle ribs..

Actually, if we can figure out Rib Spacing, the car that is the closest match would be your winner..

We would also need to pay attention to the roof, angled is somewhat unique as far as refers go...

Closest match you will probably find is the Red Caboose 57' reefer:

The ends, and doors match. I believe the BN car had diagnal panel peak end roofs, which would also match the RC car. You will need to add a panel on each side of the door, along with the diagnal brace. This could come from the Atlas BX177 beer car or an MTL 51' reefer. Whichever has a better match to the RC panels. You could also buy two and splice them to create a longer car. I did something similar in reverse to make my FGE 5145/5237.

Other thing is that the B end is has a high mounted brake wheel and tall ladders, so the MTL reefer may work. However I don't know if the MTL car has the height compression like some of their other cars.

bumping the last question, does anyone know if the MTL 51' reefers has the car height compression?
