Bought 3D Printer--Wow!

Bought my first 3D printer last week, the Monoprice IIIP for $190. Not the greatest resolution, but wow! I can import components (one at a time) from Adobe Illustrator 2D and easily transform them to 3D. Bought primarily for detail parts like bollards, cable reels, winches and cranes but, as I'm learning how to manipulate stuff, I've imagined much more. Definitely will still buy from my designers, who have served me exceptionally well, but this is a new convenience! It took me all of 10 minutes to import a crane and get it printing. Of course, it took ten minutes to print it while it takes five to assemble it from 2D parts, but the printer can print while I do other things. Easier than I thought to switch to 3D.

OK. Parts arranged for photo on table. Two cranes, trawler wheel, bitts.

Note: image would not upload to gallery so I posted from my site.

Yes. The quality is not quite what I get from my Shapeways buddies, but it's OK. The orientation for printing is everything. The trawler reels (not wheels, doh) will not print vertically and just collapse in a messy heap. Thin lines print best in the x dimension. The edge on the table is not as good at the edge on the top. Really complicated models that I bought, such as dual 40 mm bofor AA guns, don't print except as a lump, so far. But the learning curve was fairly short and not too steep. Moving things around in 3D was and remains my bugaboo.
