The pictures I remember that show compound ladders were storing coal cars.

There are some interesting examples of compound ladders in certain real-life circumstances. This adaptation of Sunnyside Yard is pretty close to the real deal:

Wow. That is an amazing yard design. What does the rest of it look like?

That's it. I designed it for @seusscaboose, but he's since moved on to a totally new layout.

Niagara Falls, NY Has a large yard with a compound ladder the west end (maybe both ends).  Built by NYC (maybe PC) in the mid/late 1960s...

I'll try to post a pic tonight.

Here's a Google Map of the Brunswick B&O yard, with a simple ladder on the west and a compound ladder on the east.  (I think the B&O has a prototype for just about any track configuration you want to model: switch in a tunnel, switch on a bridge, bridge at tunnel entrance, yeah, they got those, too.)

Given that the B&O started construction in 1828, it's not surprising that they have track prototypes for nearly everything . . . over 190 years and massive changes in underlying infrastructure, they had to solve a lot of problems - many of them for the first time in history!

Great example of a compound manual-throw ladder. Notice how the inner switches have their throws extended to switchstands outside of the main ladder. This solves most of the safety issue, at the expense of increased track maintenance.

Compound ladders, taken to the extreme:

Chicago & North Western's Proviso Yard. Built in the 1920s, capacity of more than 20,000 cars.

Uh, oh.  Looks like the cold weather got 'em, and those cars didn't want to roll.  Had to go over the hill!
