Hey guys...I'm back. New Kit from Bergen National Laser

Howdy y'all!
I've taken some time off, but have been working on a few things. I just completed a new kit in N scale...Finer Iron Power Station. It can attach to a building or can be used as a stand-alone structure. It comes with a laser engraved wood smoke stack and an add-on water tower kit. The water tower will be available soon on its own. It's good to be back and I have some exciting things planned in the future! Here is my new website to order:

https://squareup.com/store/BergNatLaser

Here are the instructions for the new kit:

That's great to see you back David! Love the new kit, very cool.
But, if I may ask, what's with the size of the brick on the chimney? Makes it look top heavy on the smaller/finer base...

Nice building and good kit-bashing opportunities. But one thing really bugs me and its the angled roof between the buildings. That's something that just wouldn't happen in the proto world. All the weather would end up in the windows of Finer Iron!!!

Just my observation and your mileage my vary.

Great to have you back in the Railwire David, and it is good to see you still designing and producing kits!  The power station looks like a great addition to your cool Finer Iron kit, but I think that Jon also has a valid observation. Imagine 10" if snow on that roof - where will it go during a thaw?  However, since that is a separate piece, it can easily be omitted.

Dave, are you back in business for good?

If so, we have a triple decker to talk about.
There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
Then you're careful grace for sure
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away

AWESOME! Glad you're back in business.

I've been kicking myself for not getting your factory at Timonium ever since I walked away from the table...

The sloped roof bothers me too. Is it possible to mount it sloping in the other direction?

Like from the top of the main building windows, sloping down towards the roof of the auxiliary building.

I wish somebody would make an N scale tall industrial chimney of 1/2-5/8 wide at the base.

Good to be back! And good to hear again from many of you!

... what's with the size of the brick on the chimney?

The stack itself is actually ceramic, thus the squarish look. It rests on a brick base.

...finer iron main building going to be available again?

I am going to do an updated version of Finer Iron with larger chimneys and improved fit (especially at the corners). This kit will include the power house. Look for this to come out in the next couple of months.

...the angled roof between the buildings...

The design of the kit is for the roof to hit about a quarter of an inch below the windows (about 3' in real life). I wasn't paying attention to this detail when I snapped the picture but the kit is easily adjustable to the correct height.  The design of the sloping roof is not pretty, nor is it efficient for drainage, but there it is none the less. It reminds me of old saw-tooth factory roofs of the early 20th century.

The roof can easily be left off if someone doesn't like its placement, correct?

I'm also curious about the functionality of the bridge between both buildings. It's placement seems to indicate that it is not a "people bridge" but probably something that houses pipes and/or electrical conduits?

I was going to ask about the smokestack and you already provided a partial answer.   Is this a commercial smokestack you will include with the kit?  You said "ceramic"?  Is it some sort of plaster?  I have never seen a ceramic (porcelain?) smokestack in N scale, but I have use commercially available smokestacks molded out of plaster (but that was years ago and I forgot the name of the manufacturer).

I used those smokestacks in a scratchbuilt power plant I made for friend's layout.

The bricks on the smokestack are quite a bit larger than the finely-engraved bricks on the rest of your kit. Would you consider making the smokestack yourself (like you did in the past)?  That way the bricks would be closer to scale.

Since we are critiquing your model, another think that stands out to me is the location of the chimneys in the main building.  Having a rather large chimney close to the outside wall with a window partially overlapping the chimney's location is possible but unlikely.  The chimney shaft goes from the roof to the basement. It would block the window.  It is likely that if that was the chimney's location, that window would have never been placed there.  Thankfully, the chimney in your kit can be easily placed anywhere on the roof.  :)

So, you are redesigning the Finer Iron kit?  Darn, you will end up with more of my money!  :D  I still owe you some micro-plywood samples.  I'll contact you off-forum.

Peteski,

You're likely thinking of the (former) Mr. Plaster smokestack.

The Mr. Plaster product line was sold and is now marketed under the Model Railstuff brand name.
