FVM Covered Hopper Announcement Flyers

I believe these particular B&O/Chessie cars were for grain.  I'll be getting some.  The new roof and end details drastically improve these cars.

While not 100% accurate, I have always heard long hatch covered hoppers are for grain, round hatch covered hoppers are for chemicals.  The old RC were all long hatch grain cov hoppers, and I think these are, too.  And, in my simple ops scheme, that is how I differentiate the two.

I will never understand why their announcements are so small one can barely read them.

Looks like an expensive buy for me, considering I need covered hoppers galore, just wondering if the CSX/NS/BNSF ones would be appropriate plying Conrail's rails in Ohio,

On the 4740 and 4750, it looks like they used the Trainworx 620 part vs a new part to match the PS end cages, e.g. no side bracing the runs the length of the car at the same height as the lowest ladder rung:

The part should be more "triangular" like either the bolster parts from the IMRC 4750 instructions (parts j & l) but with the coupler boxes (parts i & k):

Here's a pic of a prototype PS 4750 - note the side bracing that runs the length of the car is at the same height as the next highest ladder rung and lower surface of the car sides:

The more "rectangular" Trainworx part works OK on the FMC 4700, Greenville 3000, or the original Precision Masters 4750 based on cars built by Richmond Tank Car rather than PS

Depends on the difference in quality.   Adding body-mounted couplers to some of the Red Caboose covered hoppers is pretty easy with the Trainworx 620 part (I assume the same parts could also be modified to use with the PS 4740 and 4750 per my last post)

However, the roofwalks on the PM/RC releases are molded in place where replacing them with etched roofwalks would be a major PITA, and once one puts a dollar amount on their time, it's more feasible to replace them rather than upgrade them.

Phil:  If you're modeling the BNSF era, their LOs would certainly be seen in Ohio.  I see solid trains of them on the NS along the Big Sandy River, and that line runs into Ohio.  They ship grain EVERYWHERE!

As for the hatches, while trough hatches are the most common for grain service, round hatches have certainly been used on grain cars.  The elevators don't like them, but in the 60s, that was the most common style, left over from the earlier, smaller "cement" cars.  Even with having to keep moving the chutes, round-hatch hoppers were better than boxcars, so the elevators were very happy to use them.  The GN had several series of round-hatch cars, both center hatches and side hatches, specifically lettered "Grain Loading"

By the 70s, I doubt that anyone was building round-hatch grain cars, but the earlier ones were still in service.

I would think you could snip them off without affecting the coupler adapter.

It's my understanding that the FVM covered hoppers use Trainworx part # 621:

If so, note that the removal of the "extra" bracing (only for PS 4740 and PS 4750) would also remove 2 of the 3 locations that are used to secure this part in place where either:

1) extra material would need to be added to replace the two tabs that were removed; or

2) one would have to compromise and leave the bracing in place between the two tabs that are used to secure the bolster end of this part to the car body.
