While I'm no Walthers fan, one problem with many of these locos is that they are not DCC ready (not true of the 0-8-0, which had a scheduled third run at one time before it was cancelled).

Preparing (some of) these loco's for DCC shouldn't be too difficult as they also made the last run of the C-liners DCC ready by installing a printed circuit board. Unfortunately and probably due to the size op the production run no drop in decoder was ever developed for that loco. I really wished they went for standard decoder interfaces like the NEM 651. That should make the conversion (of especially the cab units) a lot easier. No special boards necessary and a wider range of suitable decoders available.

$33 for an ore car is a bargain!  It could have been $99 - with built in DCC/Sound!

Seriously - it would be great to understand how Bmann makes these decisions.

China.

Now, DM&IR paint:

Not really. Arrow (late) or circular herald scheme (early Atlas)?

Its one of the versions of the early scheme, not sure if it will have the vertical stripe or not.

It looks like it will be the same phase SD9 that atlas has done, so only correct for a few Missabe units that for the most part were sent east in the 1970's, we really need a later phase SD9 with 48'' fans.

The Railwire is not your personal army.

So here is the image that is being shown for the upcoming Atlas GP39-2. I assume this is the artwork they used for an HO model and that's why it has the correct fuel tank. This release makes sense, since it should be hot on the heels of the sound equipped GP38-2s, and should use the same mechanism(different sounds though!).

What I want to know is this model going to have the correct size fuel tank or the same, oversized fuel tank that plagues every Atlas GP38 model to date. I mean, if Atlas isn't going to deliver a model with the correct sized fuel tank, then maybe change the artwork to reflect that?? :|

That list is of LifeLike tooling that Walthers now owns and has buried somewhere.

But in true Bachmann fashion, I'm guessing it'll come with only one road number...even though these ran in unit trains.

Yes, common hoppers, tank cars, ore jennies and such just scream to be sold in multi-packs with multiple numbers; it would seem to be good business. Bachmann's respectable tank cars come in multitude of circus colors but one can't model a string of black UTLX or GATX cars without custom paint and decals. Then again, at these "new" prices, few could afford a twelve pack... :|
Thanks for identifying the G38. Wrong coast, wrong era, wrong price for me , but I can see SPF's and Conrail guys being very interested...

Keep in mind that, other than the TOFCs, all of the Bachmann new-tooling freight car models have been blown out in fire sales within a year of their release. Note that the two tank cars and the USRA hopper are available for under $15 today.  At $33 per G38, I suspect they could be had for under $20 on the street before the end of next year.

Meh. My investment in the MD shops AS 16 shell is safe, unfortunately.

No, no,no!  They haven't used Rapidos for a while now. All they new models now come equipped with the lovely "boxing glove" knuckle coupler.  The bigger it is the better it couples. :)
