That's a Pennsy G38 ore car from Bachmann, and item #18655, the black PRR scheme, appears to be accurate.  Hopefully for the Pennsy modelers, it will be priced to encourage multiple acquisitions.

Has anyone politely asked Kato about possible future roadnames on the FP7?

Armour yellow will be next then it's just whether they do a black and orange freight scheme.

Thought I recognized it. Could also be a stand-in for the cars SP used on the Eagle Mountain Kaiser Steel trains. UP also had a similar style, but I don't know in what service, as the cars for the Atlantic City (WY) - SLC trains were closer to the DM&IR style produced by Atlas and Roco.

I commented previously about Bachmann's pricing for these.  :x

Funny, I was thinking the same thing - neat car, oh, it's by Bachmann, ohh, look at that price!

The one that irks me is the queen of sitting on tooling (WKW) - they have relocated* the following tooling to a sealed time capsule in old salt mine in Kansas:

Hasn't Bachmann just had really high MSRPs in recent years and the street price is a higher % off than other manufacturers? Or maybe they have sales where the price is much lower?

And the Bach Man brings us an SD9 ... and an N scale version of their ore car + a Re-run of the bobber.

Well, MSRP aside, at least the ore car is interesting and all new tooling of a car we never had before. Anyone here know what its prototype is? Looks like a shorter version of a 30', 100-ton Gunderson gon?

All of their list prices are in the stratosphere. Street prices have been rising to a "what the?" level.

IMO it's a gambit to acclimate the market to (much) higher pricing. It managed to bump street prices for about a year and then the real values kicked back in. So, basically, nobody believes it. My last acquisition of a new S-4 was something like $50 - 1/3 the MSRP. Maybe the seller was disposing of it at cost, but still you get the idea that the MSRP includes a healthy retailer markup rarely taken in full.

It's a Pennsy G38. They're one of the two big classes PRR Ore Car, hence one of the big classes of Conrail ore car.

While I'm no Walthers fan, one problem with many of these locos is that they are not DCC ready (not true of the 0-8-0, which had a scheduled third run at one time before it was cancelled).  The Berkshire is one of the smoothest-running steam locos ever - it rivals the Kato FEF in that regard, but it is a bear to convert to DCC and it can't pull anything out of the box.  Watching a Berk pull six cars is . . . disheartening.  While I have a dozen of these (and have done work to make them operate acceptably), I wouldn't buy a re-run unless they at least included a traction-tired driver set; most people wouldn't touch them given their DCC-unfriendliness.   

So I sort of understand why we aren't seeing these models again - the mechanisms have seen better days, and if they re-ran them, most of us would complain about how outdated they are!

While I kind of understand, the simple thing to do is fix them. There is nothing wrong with the split frame mechanisms - just need to accommodate DCC (where applicable - some of them already do).

But most likely we won't see these again until another manufacturer steps up.
