FWIW, I'd add the siding to a straight leg. Much less of a PITA just in case Dad wants to actually couple/decouple stuff...

Would a siding just to park cars she's not using enhance that plan at all?

For most of us, yes, but for a five-year old, probably not.  But, that's why I added the passing siding.  I'm considering getting her the Kato 2016 North Pole Express to go with her 2015 North Pole Express.  She likes these passenger trains, but I don't see her doing any switching- just running.  With the passing siding, she can choose which train to run for some variety.

But, since it's Unitrack, I can always add a siding later.  This will keep the upfront costs down, too.  I just priced the track I need (I'm able to use every piece of the small loop that we already have), and it's still going to cost about $140.00 shipped, including the bridge, piers, and Woodland Scenics foam risers to make the grade.

This is true.  Let me try again.

Looks good.  How about this?  I also flipped the layout from my original version to put the siding up front, like you did.

This plan would allow Aly to run the 2016 North Pole Express (if we get it), which has a two-car add on set for a total of five passenger cars.  This train should fit into this passing siding.

FYI, for those following along: this plan is 30" x 54" (the grid is 6" squares).

Thanks,

Looks like the passing siding would be buried. Would this one be long enough? If not, just stretch the layout a little lengthwise--it's only 51 x 28.

Or, for a little extra room--

52 x 28

I'm with Aly. Sound gets on my nerves after a few minutes, too.

I like this one!  What's the minimum radius?  If it's 9-3/4" minimum radius, we have a winner.  Any chance I can talk you into posting the track parts list?

Thanks!

Minimum radius is 9.75. Parts list:

20000, Straight 9.76".   5
20010, Straight 7.32".   2
20020, Straight 4.88".   3
20030, Straight 2.52".   2
20040, Straight 2.44".   4
20070, Straight 1.79".   2
20071, Straight 1.14".   6
20100, Curve radius 9.8", angle 45º   17
20101, Curve radius 9.8", angle 15º   2
20110, Curve radius 11.1", angle 45º   5
20111, Curve radius 11.1", angle 15º   1
20121, Curve radius 12.4", angle 15º   1
20160, Curve radius 18.94", angle 15º   1
20220, Left turnout 4.96". (remote)   1
20221, Right turnout 4.96". (remote)   1
20453, Straight 7.32". (bridge) (silver)   1

Note, I adjusted the middle of the plan to center the bridge better--just a matter of rearranging short straight pieces.

Thanks for blowing an afternoon helping me with this.

Trust me, I had nothing better to do. Thanks for giving me something constructive to do.

Edit: I just now reaized that centering the bridge was really kinda silly...

And for fun:

Note this requires replacing two straight track parts with a double-track bridge.

DKS,

That's awesome, and it passes the Aly test!  To show you her thankfulness, she asked to add some emojis for you (she's five years old).

 :o :D  :) ;) 8) :tommann: ;) :D
