I'm enjoying following this thread more than ones documenting the epic layout building efforts on here...but still anticipating what @chicken45 is going to do with his PRR HCD layout...

Ok,  :tommann:, I am ready to be shown to The Pit of Misery...dilly dilly!

Besides the thick leaded glass, there's also a LOT of wire in one of those old CRT, and all that copper adds weight.  And, a lot of them had steel frames, to keep everything in one place, which adds even more weight.

Being a paranoid cynic, I think part of the reason for switching to digital TV was to force people to buy new TVs.  The old ones lasted almost forever, and the electronics companies wanted to sell more of the new "improved" models.

Possibly true. But one big advantage to the switch away from CRTs is energy savings. Those old sets were energy pigs.

Yesterday, I figured out how to change the Unitrack turnouts to best work with DCC and a five-year-old.  There are three screws under each turnout that can set it up for power-routing or non-power routing and a powered or non-powered frog.  I chose non-power routing and a non-powered frog, so I could set the turnouts as spring switches, in case Aly runs through a thrown switch.

I tested the layout, and the train runs beautifully in this manner.  We could run a train in each direction (one at a time), and they'll stay out of each other's way if the turnouts are left alone.  In other words, clockwise trains take the passing siding, and counter-clockwise trains stay on the main.

I'm not generally a Kato fanboy, but I'll admit that these products are very well designed.  Kato is making this ridiculously easy.  I think I'll get the 2016 North Pole Express for Aly's birthday (she'll be six soon) or Christmas.

Dave,
 I am with you on the Kato making it easy. I have been debating what to use for track on my new layout. Eric @seusscaboose   is pushing Kato. I used kato on my last HCD layout and was looking at Atlas Code 55. But after working with it a few times I am leaning back to Kato or code 80. The easy power routing and no switch machines to install makes Kato a quick setup as well.

Maybe I'll work on it when I buy a house.

In the meantime, I'm clearing out the backlog of projects.

Seeing the fine job you are doing on said projects is what makes me anticipate what you'll do on a layout.

I've handlaid code 40 track, N scale, standard, narrow, and dual gauge.  I wouldn't call it "fun".  It works, and wasn't all that difficult, but it wasn't "fun".  Dual gauge turnouts in C40 are much easier to build than the same turnouts in C55, however, as there's a little more room to work, with the narrower rail base.

Thanks! I'm nervous, though.

@jpec,

She might.  Where did you find that and what scale is it?  Is it just a false front or is there an entire structure?

Thanks,

It is a resin building, in the vicinity of N Scale,  that I picked up from Star Hobby for the princely sum of one buck. I think I cleaned him out.
