I’m waiting on mine from the hobby shop, but I haven’t seen anyone posting reviews/pics/anything of the GECX versions. Not even on feebay yet. Wonder if they haven’t began shipping those yet.

Attempting to model a modern Southern Pacific based in 2015/2016...

Also, I have a passenger train addiction...

So can anyone with a UP unit tell if the nose/walkway is actually painted??? From the photos I have seen, it looks like the factory forgot to paint them...

I asked scale trains that question. This was the reply.
" Pre-production models are used for initial photo publication and advertising. They are also used to evaluate the model for any updates that should be included as the models go into production. In this case, the pre-production models did not include the anti-skid coating that is on the nose and walkways of the prototype units. The anti-skid coating is a different color than Harbor Mist Gray and is why the production models appear different than the photos. Since the models just arrived from the factory last week, we have not had time to replace the pre-production photos with production model photos. Please accept our apologies for any confusion this may have caused."

The UP Tier 4 GEVO's all had the lighter grey nose and tread plates. They tend to weather darker grey over time if you look at prototype photos, but it is different looking. Why the anti-skid coating needed to be a different color on the prototype is beyond me.

Here are a couple cell pics of the various UP yellows on the market: (left to right) Kato's most recent SD70ACE, Fox Valley GEVO, ScaleTrains Tier 4 GEVO, Kato SD70M.   Kato changed the UP yellow when they introduced the City of Los Angeles set to a version with more orange in it and has stuck with that change since.

And comparison of Fox Valley GEVO and ScaleTrains GEVO:

Mark has already done his review over on spookshow:
http://spookshow.net/loco/stcgevo.html

Look how small that sound decoder is! I wonder if they will offer this with a wire harness for the Next18.

I really wish this was in my era. These really look great. The only question I have when they announce the C39-8... Should I get ALL of them?  :D

The chance of a wire harness for the Next18 is quite low as the NEM662 standard (which is the base of the Next18 plug) not only specifies the plug itself, but also the size of the decoder and the necessary space inside the loco for the decoder. This means that a decoder with Next18 plug always will fit inside a loco with Next18 plug without wire harness. The only exception is that a sound decoder with Next18 plug won’t fit inside the space allocated for a non sound version of the Next18 plug. That is one of the reasons for two different standards, one for Next18 sound decoders and one for decoders without sound.

Ordered a CSX unit with sound yesterday .. this is my first ESU based unit.  Looking forward to getting it from ScaleTrains in the next week or so.

I decided to order direct from ScaleTrains, even though MBK has them in stock and is less than 35 miles from my house.  Since MBKs price is exactly the same as ST, no sales tax and free shipping saved me almost $20 on the order ..

I run DC.  Can anyone tell me if these engines run at or near the speed of Kato, or do they have the slow speed motor in them like Atlas or others?

They won't run with anything else. It takes at least half the throttle to start up due to the voltage required for sound.

They do have a dc only version. Has anyone tested one of those?

Since ST is proto, I imagine it's going to be a motor closer to Atlas than the Kato

I did! That whole video was a 2% climb with FT on and fans running. I'm going to reprogram one of the units with the second Tier 4 GEVO sound file that LokSound has available and see how it sounds. At least a little variation would be good. The prime mover sound is the most challenged as the newer recording has a LOT of bass rumble to it that doesn't translate well with tiny sugar cube speakers.

I have also seen the suggestion of changing the sound speed between two engines with the same prime mover to get variety in the sounds each produces

Does anyone else have the bleed through as well as the lights coming through the gaps?

Exactly where you show and in several other places. See my posts on this thread. Mine's over at Benton now awaiting a fix or replacement.
