I went and added another builders plate to my collection (at right in the first photo).  Well, actually, it’s a rebuilder’s plate from the Seaboard Coast Line’s GP16 program that extended the lives of GP7s, GP9s, and GP18s.  This is the plate from GP16 No. 4748 that was originally Seaboard Air Line GP7 No. 1739 built in November 1950 and then later became SCL GP7 No. 919.  Later, it became CSX GP16 No. 1794.

It’s now keeping company with my first builders plate from Atlantic Coast Line GP7 No. 152 (later Seaboard Coast Line No. 740) that didn’t make it into the GP16 program.

As noted on the Weekend Update, the roofing project on the SAL station is becoming a shingle every night.  This morning, I overcame the intimidation of installing shingles up the valleys and applied the valley flashing.  I kept going and added another few courses of shingles, too.

This lower angle shows that I was able to get a nice fit of the shingles around the front and left side of the dormer and its eave, which came out much better than the decal version that I’m covering.

Here, we’re witness to second generation power only as SAL SDP35 No. 1114 and GP30 No. 506 have the honors on this southbound mixed manifest roaring through Southern Pines, North Carolina.  Within the hour, this train should reach Hamlet Yard.

Love the look of the classic "30" on that freight - great scene.

Thanks, guys!  And, as shocking as it may be, the shingle pattern reasonably lined up both vertically and horizontally as I brought both sides up around the dormer!

North end of the roof has all of the shingles applied.  I also installed the starter strip around the dormer and shingles on the dormer end.

I’ve really enjoyed backdating the layout to the spring of 1967.  It’s still the Seaboard Air Line at that point, although the merger is only a few months away.  To achieve this backdating, I located several twenty-something year-old HO scale locomotive models and updated them to DCC, sound, and LED lights.  Oh, look!  A Jolly Green Giant on the point of a southbound freight train in Aberdeen, North Carolina.

After a week or two of working on locomotive projects, I returned to the laser cut diamond roof shingling job on my Seaboard Air Line station.  It wasn’t terribly difficult, but it sure did take a while.  Includes ridge caps on all of those hips and valley flashing where the main front roof meets the dormer roofs.
