This is fun.  Watching Dave pick out colors is like watching a vegan scan the menu at a barbecue place.

Have you considered just asking your wife?

Lee (who is also moderately red/green color blind)

Lee, I love you, buddy.  ;)

I can't read this because I'm red/green color blind also.

You guys are killing me with the recommendations of Behr, Benjamin Moore, SW, Valspar.
How about some love for Glidden or Pittsburgh Paints (which are made by the company I work for) :D

My favorite color is whatever mis-tint I can get for $5 that's generally in the green to dark earth-tone range.  I had a gallon that I snagged from Lowe's that I used on the WM, and I think it looked just fine.

Anyone tried Go-Away-Green for this purpose yet?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_Away_Green.
Actually seems to be a family of camouflage-ish green tints.

Commerical paint colors that come close were compiled by someone as:
Aganthus Green, Benjamin Moore
Spice Garden, Behr
Pale Jade, Glidden
Cooking Apple Green, Farrow & Ball
Relish, Sherwin-Williams

That's pretty interesting I never thought they painted stuff like streetlights and garbage cans green to blend into anything or be less noticeable. I just figured somebody liked green and decided to use that color since it wasn't used on much else.

All I know is that the version of Go Away Green that I got is horrible for a layout fascia.  Even though I have plans to paint the layout a third green color (a grayer green paint that I haven’t bought yet), I have since repainted the fascia back to the original green color just to get rid of the Go Away Green.  I will say that after that fiasco, my original green paint doesn’t look so bad. 😉  Even if I were lazy and just decided to keep it as the original green color, the fascia needs one more coat of paint (at least on the side where I painted the Go Away Green).

Also, I painted the turnout throws gray.  I tried painting some yellow for a contrast of normal versus reverse throw, but my yellow spray paint, despite being paint + primer, was not opaque.  I ended up repainting those throws gray.  But, all is not lost.  I found some 3/4” dot stickers cheap and applied yellow (where normal is pulled out) and red (where normal is pushed in).  At a quick glance, I can tell from a distance if a throw is in the reverse position.

Coincidentally, gray, yellow, and red are the Seaboard System’s (and the predecessor Family Lines’) colors.

This is the (not so nice) hidden message in the red heart, changed from green to to blue.

This discussion about the fascia color kind of makes me glad I don't have a layout.    :)

I’m red-green colorblind, so I get to be “not so nice” by making fun of my own disability.  ;)  Interestingly, I could read the hidden message before you revealed the secret, so I don’t know whether it was accurate for colorblindness.

This discussion about the fascia color kind of makes me glad I don't have a layout.    :)

Thanks, it’s growing on me.  My wife insists that it is a more “springtime” color (the season on my layout) than going to the suggested grayer-green.  In my laziness, that gives me an excuse to live with it for a while before purchasing another color of green paint and going at the experiment again.

To really help with the decision about the final fascia color, I installed a skirt.  This is merely 48” landscape fabric held up with clothespins that are hot glued to the backside of the fascia.

For less than $30.00, I like it.  For now, I just pinned it into place without really trying to be neat, because it will have to come down when I paint the last coat of paint (I hope) on the fascia.  While you can see through the landscape fabric, this should be less noticeable from the outside once I install the skirting on the far side of the layout.  A super easy way to hide the sh!t under your layout!

While I would not probably go as far as your wife, stating that the fascia is a "spring color" (those freshly-sprouted green colors are very vivid), it is IMO much better than the other color swatches. Those other colors were all just too "blah" or dull (for a lack of better term).  Yes, fascia is not supposed to stand out, but those other colors just didn't look very good to me.  Maybe because I'm used to seeing my friend's layout which has a fairly similar color fascia.

I also find the black skirt too stark. Like a black hole under the layout.  Again, maybe because my eyes are accustomed to the color of my friend's layout skirt (which  is also the color of the skirts we use at my local NTRAK club). We use Velcro sewn in to the top of the skirt and the hook part adhered to the edge of the fascia.  It makes it a snap to install and remove it, and no sagging.

I think black might work if you had a valance over the layout,  fascia and skirt all the same color. That would make it more like a framed diorama.

Thanks for your input, Pete.  For less than two hours work, including the drive to the hardware store, though, I’m okay with this skirt on the cheap.  The black looks fine to me.  Your friend’s layout and skirting look very professional, but that color is too light for this unfinished space in our basement.  I’m on painted concrete floor in here.  While black will certainly show dirt, too, I don’t think that I have to worry about landscape fabric absorbing funk.

That Velcro installation looks really nice, but clothespins are stupid easy.
