I really like that the fronts of those structures face away from the layout fascia. Just please avoid the "massive signs with lots of dead space that could be read by someone flying overhead on an airliner" thing that most model railroaders seem to have to have. Oh yeah, and they usually have to have typefaces that didn't exist in the layout's timeframe (almost always Helvetica or other similar typefaces that didn't exist until the 60s or later)..I tell people all the time that most business signs are quite small, usually no bigger than a few feet in each dimension, unless of course it's a large building itself that want's be noticed from a nearby highway. Signs on businesses like the ones in these structures above would be small.
I agree regarding signage. Photos of the 1:1 stores in Aberdeen don’t have large signs at all. Hopefully, I can find some era-appropriate signs from Aberdeen in the 1980s, but I haven’t had much luck finding any to date.DFF
