When I think of flag stop I think of an old western town looking tiny depot with gingerbread trim.  :trollface:

Rock Ridge?  :D

Look for prototype inspiration.

Or just make it a paved space.

Had some time earlier today, and I painted and began installing the yellow grab irons.

I tried to remove the grabs from the former CSXT shell before stripping the body shell’s paint, but I not only damaged the yellow paint, I mangled the grab irons, trying to get them free.  Yesterday, I stripped and reformed the grabs, and, this morning, I primed and painted them.  Four grab irons installed and ten to go.  That additional splash of yellow helps jazz up a gray paint scheme.

How would say the Krylon Gloss Smoke Gray compares to the grays on your other SBD engines?

@High Hood,

I'm colorblind, so I can't give you accurate account.  But, once I get the locomotive back together and on the rails, I'll take a picture next to some manufacturers' version of "French Gray," e.g., Athearn, Atlas, and Rapido.  They all vary enough that I think the Krylon Gloss Smoke Gray will fit in.

I applied the clear coat last night, which was Krylon ColorMaxx Satin Crystal Clear.  I got some crazing in spots, but I'm not panicking (at least the decals didn't react in a bad way).  This crazing occurred with the black paint over the gray.  Interestingly, this is all Krylon paint, so I can only imagine that I sprayed it too heavy in those spots, causing the crazing.  With the black, I just sanded with a fine grit and lightly repainted.  That worked well.  I'll try this with the clear, too.  The worst is on the rear and the roof, where there are little to no decals. Stand by.

I love that Seaboard F unit! In the 80s, my NRHS chapter in Florida was going to run an excursion using 116 and other F-units but something caused us to cancel at the last minute. I never got to ride behind (or even see) 116 and the other Seaboard units.

Lived in Raleigh in the late 50's through mid 60's.  Saw a lot of SAL and ACL stuff but, obviously never Seaboard.  Guess I never appreciated either line much at the time.

Wanted to get out of NC as soon as I could (did so) and very glad to have done so.  I do regret, however,  that I didn't pay more attention to the railroading that was happening before my very eyes.

I do enjoy your layout and the progress reports on its development.

Great info, @John!  I like the Farmer’s Market.  Good modeling opportunities there.

But, looking at that map you posted makes me want to model a corner of a golf hole!  Maybe the green, a sand trap, and a sliver of the fairway along the tracks.  😀

That’s perfect!  The great thing about the foam substrate on the layout is that it will be easy to modify the landform (with some help from lightweight spackling) to form a green, bunker, cart path, etc.  I’ll have to do some research to figure out what hole that is on the course.

Thanks, John!

EDIT: Looks like it’s No. 2, which is a Par 5, 490 yard hole.  Runs right along the tracks. 🙂
