I believe it was actually Neil Armstrong that said that. He was a bit of a rebel. John Glenn was a company man.

You're right, that was Neil. A frequent quip. He had the typical low-key, dry sense of humor characteristic of test pilots. He was a poker buddy of my father's when he was training at NASA/Edwards AFB.

Do you know what diameter white styrene rod you'll need to model the hundreds, if not thousands of cigarette butts that will be scattered around the trash can?  And are you planning to have decals made of the tan filter tips one would find on Winstons, as opposed to the all white Salems?
You're modeling North Carolina, remember.

The Surgeon General

Too funny.  Don't forget Camel!  No matter what your opinion on smoking, I can confirm that, particularly on a summer day, the aroma of tobacco rolling through Winston-Salem from the R.J. Reynolds' factory smelled pretty damn good.

I went to the University of Richmond, so I think of Philip Morris in Richmond, Virginia when I think of Marlboro.  It’s funny, back when I was in college, you could go down to the bars in Shockoe Slip, and cigarette girls would come around and trade you Philip Morris cigarettes for other brands.  In other words, they’d take your opened and almost empty pack of Camels and give you a new pack of Marlboros.

South Carolina cuts tobacco and sends it to North Carolina and Virginia, where they know what to do with it.

Sort of like barbecue.  South Carolina should just send their hogs to North Carolina and stop wasting time slathering them with mustard!  Blecch!

My parents are Duke grads, and they always said that you could smoke your way through college without buying a pack.  Once you graduated, however...

yes...the Duke Endowment paid for the majority of my grad school. Always had mixed feelings about that knowing where $ was invested and coming from.

Tonight, I added a second ProtoThrottle to the layout.  I was worried about connecting it, but with a simple change to make it Cab B, since my first throttle is Cab A, it connected and worked flawlessly.  Now, Aly and I can run trains together.  It will also be nice, when I’m running solo, to use one throttle for one of the connecting roads, and the other for the Seaboard, without having to juggle locomotives or consists on one ProtoThrottle.

Also, I love these 3D printed pockets that hold the ProtoThrottle.  I now have three pockets and may add more.

The Seaboard Central (“SC”) is now a fallen flag, absorbed by the Seaboard System (“SBD”).  Former SC No. 1700 (nee Burlington Northern No. 1700) has become SBD No. 1700.

Nothing.  The Party Bus is still in the fleet and safe from retirement or merger.  It’s resting comfortably in a display case at present.

With SBD No. 1700 returning to the rails, I moved my era up ten years to circa 1983 and into the Seaboard System years.  But just barely.  To do this, I swapped a few locomotives and freight cars to and from the layout to remain consistent with the era.  I’ll run the layout like this for a few weeks, and then I’ll blend in a few more pieces of SBD rolling stock to better represent up to 1986.

I love these ScaleTrains SD45s that I patched for the SBD.

OK, who weathered the Geep?  :D
It looks really nice.  The only thing I’d suggest would be to add more grime on the white corner handrails.

. . . and around the fuel tank, where the weathering wore off from handling while doing the latest round of decaling.   :P
