Dave,

I'm really enjoying the step by step pictures of this build. Well done - Keep it up.

Thanks, Don.  I’ve been known to use my own posts as a journal to recall how I built a project.  Last year, the big scratchbuilding job was the highway bridge.  I used old photos and the Seaboard Central 2.0 thread as a resource to build that bridge and this station in HO scale.

Well, the dormer roof went way better than expected.  I managed to scribe that valley in the roof sheathing close enough on an early attempt that it didn’t take fifteen tries.  Thank goodness.  I also used the first side as a pattern for the second side before I glued it down, saving a lot of guesswork there, too.

It took me a week to build the roof, but I’m calling it finished:

The next step will be to locate materials for two chimneys and the gutter downspouts.  I’ll also add the trimwork to the fascia boards that forms the gutters.

I found some 0.040" phosphor bronze wire last night and built the downspouts at each corner and from the roof over the second floor dormer.  Photos later.

Also, it just occurred to me that I could use the piss-poor chimneys in the DPM kits and clad them in the N Scale Architecture brick veneer that I used on the walls.  With the exception of the DPM doors and windows (and possibly chimneys), everything else I used on this station so far has been from my parts box.  So, to date, I have a whopping $38.30 into this project, including $9.94 in shipping from MBK.  Not bad.

As stated, the downspouts were made from 0.040" phosphor bronze wire and are installed.  One at each corner of the structure and one under the dormer roof.  I may redo that dormer downspout, because I haven't decided if I'm satisfied with the fit.  However, unlike the other downspouts, this one is not yet glued in place.

Unfortunately, I did not have any success with trying to make chimneys out of the material from DPM.  I think it would make more sense to just scratchbuild them than to try to reconstruct some poor flat castings that need to be glued together to create a three-dimensional chimney.

That's awesome !  If you're looking for another project to tackle, I could use this one located in Hanover, PA.  Given the nice straight roof lines, it should be a breeze compared to your curved slopes :D

That's as good as the N scale version, maybe better because you can see more of it to detail.  Nicely done.

@mu26aeh get me the footprint dimensions and good photos of all four sides and any key details, and I'll whip up a set of scratch build plans for you.

Haha!  Sez you!  I see hip roofs on each end of the overhanging roof and a dormer on top that crosses over to the other side.  :scared:

Thanks,

Thanks, Lee!  I agree that the construction can be more appreciated in the larger scale.  But, the end result is yet to be seen, as I could still screw up the paint and decals.

First go at a scratchbuilt chimney.  It’s built from four pieces of styrene strip forming a core that is clad in styrene “brick.”  I kinda like it.  Need to build one more.

You sure you ain't fibbin'? You didn't sneak out and get somebody to tool that thing up and injection mold it, did you? 'cause that's too dang purty to be scratch-built.  :D
