@Point353,

Nailed it.  That is exactly what I thought.  I’m not sure why it never occurred to me to split the power, especially where the prototype has scenarios where they do that.

Guess I better start shopping for that second SOU engine.  Orrrrrrrrrrr, a pair of Southern F-units.   :D

You could have an Atlas U23B now:
https://yankeedabbler.com/atlas-10003451-u23b-sou-southern-3936-gold-dcc-sound-ho-scale/
https://yankeedabbler.com/atlas-10003452-u23b-sou-southern-3939-gold-dcc-sound-ho-scale/
https://yankeedabbler.com/atlas-10003453-u23b-sou-southern-3964-gold-dcc-sound-ho-scale/

Or, the Atlas B23-7 is supposed to be shipping sometime during 3Q21.

Actually, the U23B will work better for my SOU era, which begins in 1974 when the SOU took over the original NS.  The B23-7s didn’t go into manufacturing until 1977.

And now I remember why I haven’t operated the line as discussed upthread: I’ll have to learn how to consist/deconsist “on the main.”  I can’t do that with a ProtoThrottle, and, up to now, I have been consisting on the programming track with a LokProgrammer.

Ooh, going to have to be careful with the purchase of an Atlas U23B.  No. 3964 wasn't built until, get this, 1977, which is basically the end of U23B construction and when GE started the Dash 7 line.  The other two U-Boats, Nos. 3936 and 3939, appear to be built in 1975.  That's a little better.

A previous production run (from a decade ago) included road numbers (DC) 3919, 3923 and 3928; and (DCC) 3920, 3924 and 3930.

You could hunt for one of those, or perhaps inquire if Atlas might still have a decorated shell on hand in their inventory of spare parts.

I’m not so worried about the road number that I would need to go hunting for old stock or used locomotives when I can get a current model with a LokSound decoder and LED lights.  I need to do nothing but swap out the couplers for Sergent Engineering couplers.  Not one person I know would call me out if I happened to run No. 3936 in 1974.

Got another fifteen trees built and installed, which were added to the viewblock.  I’m not finished here.

Here’s the overall views:

I’ve got another fifteen or so tree armatures cleaned and painted, and I hope to get them flocked and planted tomorrow.

I model SOU circa 1962-ish. U23b was introduced in 1968. But I like it, I bought one (second one on order).
My railroad, my rules.

Let’s do the time warp again.....

Haha!  Yes!  I’ve got an anachronism or two in my fleet.  Much of the reason I went to multiple eras.

Trees!  I made thirty-three trees this weekend and planted them in three spots: 1) to continue the ridge line of trees that are a viewblock down the middle of the layout, 2) a small grove at the corner of a freight house to provide a break in the scenes (and give a place for the kudzu to stop), and 3) the forest behind Aberdeen as another viewblock.

The ridge line and the small grove of trees:

I left a small window in the canopy of the small grove to be able to see the turnout on the NS line:

The forest behind Aberdeen, which is going to need many more trees to fill it all:

It’s progress!
