Is the paint dry on that SCL pulpwood flatcar?

Haha!  Just barely.  I took the picture, then noticed that SCL car, but I was too lazy to restage and retake the shot, since that car was at least plausible.  :P

I finally got around to buying more sand-colored latex paint that I use to coat the bare foam scenic forms.  This allowed me to apply a base coat of ground foam.  The majority of this area will receive trees to act as a scenic divider.

A smart person would have painted that track first.  Then, I could have ballasted, too.

Dave,
With great care, you'll have to mask everything off. Hopefully any repairs to your scenery will be very minimal.

Track can be brush painted.

Yeah, it won’t be a big deal.  I keep a roll of 2” masking tape handy, so I’ll just mask it off.  Any ground foam lost will be easily repaired during ballasting.  This is just an extra step or two that I caused myself.  That’s all.

Don't prototype railroads ballast the track after the scenery is already in place?

Twenty-nine SuperTree armatures were cleaned up, put into a scrap foam stand, and painted today.

Correct.  But, they’ll have to do until I figure out how to mass produce the necessary longleaf pine trees.

Also, if you're treeing it in, it should all be dead leaves and pine needles on the floor, anyway. So just airbrush that too!

Agreed.  I have some dead-looking ground foam and flock that I use for forest floors before the trees go in.  The green ground foam was only the base layer, to ensure coverage for wherever the forest stops.

I masked off and painted a little track this evening.  So, all track on the Aberdeen, Carolina & Western (former original NS Ry.) is now painted.  Ballasting to be completed soon on this line:

Not all of it. A lot of the forests in this part of the country have openings and room for lots of vines (briars and thorns) to grow, plus lots of little trees trying to grow through. You’ll have some spots that are just the dead, then others that are nearly impassable due to the undergrowth. You don’t wanna know how many golf discs I’ve lost thanks to a bad tree kick and not being able to get back to it
