UP derailment will shutdown N/S mainline for a month...

...between Redding, CA and Dunsmuir, CA.  This has caused a service cancellation on the Coast Starlight as well as significant freight detours between LA and Portland/Seattle.

I've ridden across this bridge a number of times on Amtrak.
It looks like a nice Central Valley conversion to a pin-connected bridge.  I would estimate the bridge construction date around 1906 or so.

Yeah, they smacked that bridge pretty hard.

Given the expected duration of the outage I find it annoying that UP, BNSF and Amtrak apparently can't come to an agreement to reroute the Starlight via the High Line. This reveals, again, the attitude that Amtrak is an optional inconvenience not to be accommodated when something goes wrong. They can do it, they've done similar things before (CZ via Denver-Cheyenne-SLC during washout repairs), they just don't want to this time. Irritating.

That bridge is likely to be replaced with something soulless.  Might be a good month to fan the High Line, Amtrak or not.

Is the CORP line over Siskiyou Pass currently in service?  If not, the segment between Klamath Falls and Chemult is a single point of failure on the west coast.

Wow, that bridge is bowed at the end, no wonder it's going to be out of operation for so long!

Odd, the Cascades isn't running today either. I couldn't find why not as the Amtrak site usually says why. I can only assume it's yet another landslide somewhere in the Puget Sound area. They've had more of those than any given winter since starting the train.

I do believe the CORP line is in use.  Whether it can handle much traffic I don't know.

Mike:  Could there be some reason, such as signaling, or track standards, that make it impractical to run Amtrak over the BNSF line?  In the 70s, parts of the Inside Gateway were still manual block (no automatic block signals), and if it still is, Amtrak may not want to run that way.

Couldn't be a whole lot worse than the line over Raton! It's also possible that this particular reroute would throw the schedule completely out of whack, with equipment and staff in the wrong places at the wrong times. In the detours of my experience (CZ through Cheyenne, CS over Tehachapi), the end-to-end schedule was kept close to normal, with only the detoured stations losing service.

Cool bridge, but a dinosaur of another time. A lovely dinosaur...
Here it is in model form, on Otis McGee's HO SP layout I had the pleasure of operating on recently.
I had a 2-10-2 on the head end, with a cabforward pushing hard in the back, both sound equipped.
Talk about time standing still, I'd say Otis had nailed the setting...
Sorry to see the real bridge go, replaced with lord knows what.

My money's on a deck bridge of some sort, which probably would have survived this accident unscathed.
