Paint would still attach to all of the high and low spots when sprayed, so if you're thinking it would only fill in the low spots, probably not likely.
I think Ed is happy the way it is and if he isn't worried about the louvers, he won't sweat the paint which certainly doesn't look horrible.

I totally get what you're saying. Putting soot up there isn't to compensate for a lack in talent or technique. It's realistic, and it happens to fix the color match.
Ed now has an airbrush. I'm trying to convince him to use it!!
He said he's bringing it tonight to Thirsty Modeling so I'll get to see it tonight, and after looking it with my loupe, endless chide him during our Supertree Marathon.

I'm right there with both of you. I weather my stuff, because it just doesn't look prototypical (IMO) if it's totally clean. If it's not dirty, it doesn't go on the layout. That said, I have totally benefitted from the fact that the same "weathering because it's prototypical" just happened to hide some boo-boos all at the same time. Win-Win!

I will say if that is brush painted its an amazing brush painting job!

At the end of the day Ed needs to decide if he will be happy with the end product, if the answer is without hesitation yes, then push forward...
If there's any doubt then strip it and find some archer louvers while you're at it. doing it over will be worth it if there's any hint of being unsatisfied...

As far as weathering, even professional movie prop makers use weathering to "hide their crimes", there is a whole bunch of grey between solely weathering for realism and Outcome based hide it with dirt

Would these headlight prints work for a Lifelike SWwhatever you want it to be ?  I was looking for some a while back for engines for @Blazeman

Not really, unless you're trying to turn the SW9/1200 into an SW7, because the big "bucket" version John's done is different than the pointier SW8/9/1200 version.

The later ones, like the ones on LL units look like this.

Note the "face" is narrower and the taper sharper.

I believe EMD changed the style over either sometime during the SW7 production or between it and the SW8 and SW9. I also believe (I could be wrong) that generally the larger "steam engine" style lights corresponded to the "arched" cab windows as well, or at least largely so.

Josh was so disgusted with the paint job that he had to wear Conrail-colored gloves just to handle it!

Josh, for a brush-painted the paint job is not bad at all.  It is not typical  quality, but not *THAT* bad.  The patch job of the front windows bothers me more than the paint. 

I wouldn't brush-paint my models, but if Ed is ok with it, I'm ok too. There are no giant globs or serious paint buildup anywhere.  Ed, what brand of paint did you use?  It goes on smoothly and covers well. How many coats?

It bothers me too! The true amount of work required on it wasn't visible until I got some paint on it though. Now that I do, I'll be taking the sanding sticks to it and making it much better.

I amuses me that that's the biggest problem in my eyes with the thing, and it's taken until now for someone to mention it! lol.
