There's a Conrail modelling novel?

AHahahahaha. This is really funny given Dave's feedback on my manuscript about my layout.

Now back to your regularly scheduled RGS thread...

Working with the photo backdrops for Rico:

Notice the LED "hose" Christmas lights.  They're cool white...somewhat close to 5000K.  I'm going to hang them from the ceiling as straight as I can using plastic cable stables to even out those hot spots you see.  @Ed Kapuscinski asked me about whether I should just build a valence but...the ceilings are 9 feet above the floor which means that unless I build a ridiculously tall valence, you'd be able to see up behind it anyway.  Besides, the ceiling is so high it's not visible under normal layout viewing angles.

These scenes are actually from Rico, CO.  I had to GIMP out the surviving RGS Rico water tank on one of them since I'll be building it in 3 dimensions in the yard anyway.

You could hang two strips/hoses parallel to one another, with one of them offset by half the spacing between the LEDs.

I didn’t care for how the LED hose looked and it didn’t throw enough light.  Moving on...

Did you try randomly hanging white Christmas light strings?

Joking aside, lighting has been a challenge.  When it's dark out and there's no light coming onto the basement, the lighting over the layout looks plenty bright enough.  When there's daylight coming in, oddly that's when the hot spots and dark spots seem more intense.  I installed a black-out shade over the layout window that might help.

Keep one thing in mind when lighting never let the light go directly at what you want lit, have it reflected and then diffused if possible first.

Love that backdrop Dave!!!!

The backdrop looks tremendous, Dave. I'm definitely checking out LARC. Are you attaching the images directly to your wall, or using a substrate?

Eventually directly to the wall.  I'm not securing anything until I have a better idea of where everything's going to go and I'm farther along on the scenery.
