Arnold S-2

At a display layout I maintain, one of the locomotives they have is an Arnold S-2. The other day when I went to do some clean-up work, I noticed it was set off to the side. When I picked it up two gear halves fell out. I know these have a penchant for doing this; was wondering if there's aftermarket replacement gears available for these. It's a good little runner but now it will barely pull itself.

I haven't looked but if anybody made replacement it would be NWSL (North West Short Line). Look over their online catalog to see if you can find the replacement wheelsets.

Yes, if you're talking about the axle gears. NWSL has full axle/gear wheelsets. Near the bottom of page 3 of this catalog PDF: http://www.nwsl.com/uploads/chap3_web_03-15-16.pdf

I had to de-fuzz the NWSL gears with a nylon brush in a Dremel. They make the gear in a long stick and then slice them to width. Mine looked like they sliced and left the fuzz on.

Thanks for the advice but I think it might be one of the intermediate gears. I'll take it apart this weekend when I'm down there.

The intermediate gears and the axles gears are the same. NWSL used to sell them as complete axles and individual gears. Not sure if they still do.
I had problems with the NWSL wheelsets wobbling. Two out of four sets . They told me to send back the entire package and they would pick a good set for me. Three monthes and two emails later I got a new set - all four sets wobbled.

Now have an
Atlas S-2, a much better locomotive.

The gears are the same.

But the intermediate gears spin freely.

The axle gears are pressed onto the axle and this have constant pressure applied to them.

I've seen a lot of these locos.  And have never seen a problem with the intermediate gears.

I would be 99.9999 % sure it is the axle gears.

I got rid of all my Arnold S-2s except one.  I stripped it of all gears and unneeded stuff to make a dummy.
They are pretty free rolling,.

My plan is to make an S-2 slug one day.

Mine also had cracked axle gears, and NWSL replacements.  They all rolled smoothly, as have all of my NWSL wheels.  On the other hand, my NWSL wheels were all bought MANY years ago, most before the Arnold S-2 came out.  The S-2 replacements were probably my last NWSL purchase.

Jeff.  I got rid of all my S-2s but still have a couple of parts.   I used to come by them cheap or free and then cannibalize them for gears that were still good.

I see I have two uncracked gears and some axles (I used to replace the traction tire wheels with plain wheels to increase conductivity).  Using a NWSL puller helps,
