Weekend Update 7/17/16

That reminds me of one of my first rides on the former New Haven.  October 1974 was my first trip home (to NY) from college in Providence.  It was the Friday afternoon of the Columbus Day weekend, and apparently almost every other college student between Boston and Providence had the same idea.  When the train arrived in Providence it was already completely full. 

Reminds me of comment from a co-worker riding SEPTA back to Trenton on afternoons leading to long weekends. All the college students from the Phila schools crowd on the trains, stashing their gunny sacks on the racks. "It's the dirty laundry ride," she proclaimed.

About 6 years after starting, my B&M NW2 is nearing completion. I've still got some of the smaller decals to apply, then varnish and putting the glass back in. The holes for the front handrails seem to be overfilled with paint, they don't fit any more. Maybe that's a good excuse to replace the plastic with phosphor bronze?

Yeah, nice B&M unit.  I do find the slightly out-of-register red in the nose stripes slightly distracting, but I realize that there isn't much you can do.

This also reminds me that Arnold did a bonehead move on their SW1 by making those stripes silver/red instead of white/red.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed!....Out of the 3 companies that have produced this paint scheme, only Bachmann got it right(!), Atlas and Arnold both got it wrong...Which seems crazy since it isn't exactly a complex paint scheme

Yeah, Atlas made the white pin-striping around the red way too wide.  I agree that it is annoying that they can mess up even a simple paint scheme like that. But I guess that is what happens when the artwork is designed thousands of miles away from USA by someone who probably has never seen a real U.S. locomotive.  Still, you would think that with enough of free research material out there on the Internet, they woudl do a better job.

And in Arnold's case, the correct scheme would have been cheaper to produce as it would only need 2 Tampo passes (red and white) and not 3 (red, silver, and white).    Yes, I sound like a  grumpy old man, but I have a valid gripe!  And I actually own all those models, so I have aright to complain!

Thanks guys! It's Tru-Color black paint applied with an Iwata Neo airbrush. Yes, the stripes could be better, but there's not much to be done there  really. They don't show up in the pictures, but I replaced the grab irons on the side of the hood with some wire ones from BLMA.

This paint is the cats meow!  Extremely thin and even coverage, and a ready-to-decal surface finish.  Just like the old Accu-Paint used to be.

Yeah it came out great. I thinned it 1:1 with their thinners so that I could spray it at a lower pressure.
