IFRX 4750 LO Ex-Penn Central Hopper

Here's an N-Scale Intermountain 4750 LO fresh off my work bench.
Fades and initial rust with cheap craft paint, followed by oil wash and powders pushed into the wet oils. Patches with decals and craft paints. FVM 36" metal wheels.

I get the stippled rust effect using cheap craft paints and a small piece of foam cut to a very sharp angled edge.
I lightly dab on the craft paint along the sharp edge then blot off most then apply to create the rusty panel effect. Errors can be removed with water.
When I like what I have, I hit it with a misting of dullcote then move on to applying oil washes.
Here's a flick of the car prior to the oil wash to give you the rust base technique using the cheap craft paints.

Very nice!  One question, how many different (which) colors were used to represent the various shades (stages) of the rust?

I use Burnt Sienna and Raw Umber for the oil wash, applying a light wash mainly to the rust areas I created with the cheap craft paint and removing most of the oils on the color sections of the panels.
The next step is where you start seeing things happen.
I then mix up some black and reddish brown chalks for a dark rusty tone and carefully start working it into the wet oils with a short soft brush. I carefully brush off
the excess chalk. This creates that dry rusty tone. Try it on some practice pieces.
