A Trip Around Horseshoe Curve

Here is a brief video of trip around Horseshoe Curve.  They have done a great job this year clearing trees and brush to restore views.  Looks like an N scale layout.

I still remember the only time I was able to visit Horse Shoe Curve back when I was in the Army.  Was fortunate enough to catch a funeral train with Pennsylvania - Reading Seashore Line and Erie Lackawanna Baldwins heading to scrap and remember the late night vision of the Broadway Ltd. that had a Precision National ex-UP EMD GP9 on the point.  So many years later and still it remains one of my best railfan trips!!!

I rode the early Amtrak Broadway Limited around it in 1973.  At night.  In the fog.  Not very impressive under those circumstances...

The first time I saw the Curve was on Amtrak's Broadway Limited on a 1975 night. I went to the vestibule and opened the Dutch door to see the lights of the train curving on either side of me. An impressive and memorable sight.

I've been there once on a annual family road trip when I was around 10 or 11.  We hit up Horseshoe, Strasburg and East Broad Top on that trip.  Great memories....and videos, if I ever find them.

Wow, hearing all these stories makes me glad that I live only an hour away, and I rode on the curve behind NKP 765.

Rode around the curve twice.  First time on the Manhatten Limited in 1965 going to boot camp in Great Lakes.  Navy payed for a roomette which was nice.  Spotted a set of Baldwin sharks on a coal train going down the curve.  Only time I ever caught the sharks.  Next time was 1968, same train but coach and under PC.  Dirty late train into Chicago.  Was headed to San Diego for sea duty.  Took the COLA to LA (great train) but that is a different story.
