I looked in Google Earth---find Cienega Creek bridge  in AZ, then pan eastward along the southern loop of track---there really is several miles of engines

I can attest to the crude drop in car demand. About 3 full trains worth (that I know of) of crude cars have been in storage on Reading & Northern tracks since Jan 2015.

Here's Grand Junction, CO a couple of months ago:

That's probably around a mile long, and several tracks wide. Roseville, CA looked almost as bad. Our conductor on the Zephyr said that it was due to declining coal traffic.

The former D&RGW Tennessee Pass line just west of the Royal Gorge at Parkdale, CO is being used for coal car storage.

Gettysburg & Northern is storing over 100 crude/ethanol tankers, takes up almost all available siding space.  Everyone was worried they were full because placards are still on cars.

because of the (almost) non-existent storage capacity at the refineries and the tankers floating  in circles at the terminals, I would not be surprised if this was tried
