Need help with N scale sleeper for Amtrak North Star.

With Kato releasing the Amfleet cars in phase 1*, I'm compelled to buy a the 4 car box set to represent the North Star the ran from Midway to Duluth.  I need help identifying and finding a model for the sleeper that run through to Chicago.  I'm pretty sure it's a 10-6, but I'm also pretty sure that doesn't help a lot.

Here's some pics of the web showing the train.

The only thing that seems to be an identifier is that the wide spaced windows are on the right hand end of the car.  A lot of 10-6's seem to have them on the left.  but I have no idea what I'm talking about so....

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jason

Nice Ryan.  I think that last shot says it all.

I was actually going to contact John Hill and a couple noted Twin Cities rail fans that I knew took pictures in that era.  I probably know every freight car picture John has on RRPA, but passenger I know nothing.

So what N scale options would I have preferably in Amtrak paint?  I see CC made one at some point.  Not sure on phase yet.  If Kato does a ph2 F40ph then I would probably want ph2, but if a just have to use my current ph3 loco, I'd look for that.

Isn't Kato releasing the UP Pacific 10-6 car in the Southwest Limited?

I have no idea how well this matches, but it's the Walther's 10-6 sleeper available (or was available) in N scale.  You might be able to find it on eBay, if you can't find any vendors with the car in stock.

Hope this helps,

Yeah, but I don't think separately.  And I won't buy the whole set just for the sleeper and sell the rest.  I' m not crazy like you.  :D

Thanks Dave, I did find that and found a place to buy one.  It may be a good stand but from this thread and what little research  I did myself previous, it looks like the UP sleeper would be most correct.  The Walthers car I believe has a different window pattern.

As Bryan notes, Kato has announced the right car (ex-Up Pacific) in Amtrak Phase I paint as part of the Southwest Limited set.  However, these cars got Phase II paint around the time they were refit for HEP - and two of your photos show Phase III paint.  Phase I paint is arguably wrong.  You could of course repaint it, and it would look terrific

ConCor's 10-6 Budd sleeper isn't exactly right for the UP Pacific cars, but if you only want one car it's a pretty good approximation.  The major differences are a different window arrangement on the aisle side (10 windows vs 8 ), and skirts.  Concor has sold these in Phase II paint, which would be perfect.   Trimming the skirts off of a decorated car is pretty easy, but filling the two extra aisle windows would mean a repaint.

The Walthers car is all wrong - it's a Pullman 10-6.   Amtrak had these, but I don't think they ever got HEP.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Just knowing that the Kato car is probably correct, I can at least go forward and keep my eye out for an a single car or maybe something from the parts department.  With all the Amtrak stuff Kato is doing, seeing this car get released separately in PHII/III isn't a crazy hope.  Not opposed to painting one, but that's already a pretty big backlog.  :-X

Thanks everyone.

I don't think they make a UP 10-6.

On that note, is the UP 'Pacific' sleeper just the Budd Sleeper?  Okay, nevermind, I see the skirts now.

Because that's available in the parts dept, painted silver no less.

Just looked at my Cal Zephyr and that sleeper is the mirror image on both sides.

Yeah, it's not listed as a CZ car, but I think it is.

Oh well, that would have been too easy.
