I like the slanted lettering but I think the size of the lettering is a bit too large.  Or something is not quite right.

How many contemporary railroads do you see using serif-ed lettering?  Aside from tourist lines, um, practically none.  BNSF is the only one I can think of, and then only in circle and cross logos as a retro nod to Santa Fe heritage, but major applications just don't use it anymore.  Asshats don't let other asshats use serifs.

I agree - I did mention that earlier.

I think the "No Serif" thing is a bit inaccurate.  While the big bold sans-serif is certainly the majority, there are plenty of shortlines who have their logos or text names in a serif font.

With that said, I know my logo submission is likely still too old school for the era (bad habit of mine).  I really like Ed's work thus far.

I know.  I just couldn't bring myself to agree with you directly.

And VA, I get what your saying.  If the trains are trundling by at low speeds, like the Richmond Pacific, serif works.  If they're moving at a clip, not so much; they create blur rather than allow the eye to focus and comprehend in milliseconds.

That all being said, was this a call for a logo or complete redesign of the scheme?  The former I think.  And in that case, my logo's the best.   :scared:

Shrink the lettering a lot, use a different font, tone the yellow down A TON, and darken the grey, and I kinda like it. My 2 cents...

Those schemes were done around Christmas. I just Google sans serif. I get it, but when lettering in MS Paint, options are limited.

Sirenworks, I did start by asking about logos, but the paint scheme needs tweaks too. Of those last three schemes, the middle is to complex for a non class 1, I think.  The yellow would probably be closer to Armour Yellow that what is shown, the gray Harbor Mist or dark SP.

Ed did good work. Jr. has skills.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Lots of good logo options. Probably enough to have an evolution and history. The first IBRR units would have been painted in 96/97, probably patch jobs on UP engines to cover their nose logo, road numbers, and name. I guess the first units could also have been junkers from SP that UP passed off rather than upgrade themselves; I think there are some SD45s involved, and I have two undecs from KATO waiting for application once the details are settled, though I thought about whether the IBRR might go all GE to start, given the trends in sales at the time. That's plausible if I stick with the back story that the IBRR came about from the ICC and Surface Transportation Board intervening strongly to break the service meltdown on UP after the SP merger.

The other option if I want a longer corporate history is that the IBRR started with the Spokane International, which UP bought in the 50s. The IBRR would then be an outgrowth of NAFTA, an attempt to boost traffic to and from Canada after UP sold the line in the 83 recession, or perhaps sooner.

Maybe I should have just listened to @GaryHinshaw and chosen SW Oregon and Klamath Falls as a base of operations for the Oregon Belt running out of an imagined enlarged and upgraded Coos Bay to KF, and then SW towards the Transcon. I was thinking central Oregon for a uniquely sceniced railroad until Cold River showed how that should be done with his Oregon joint line layout.

Oh god, I just realized something... in 96/97, everyone still loved Comic Sans...

I think for the logo, I would have the Idaho State map image with a literal belt and a big rodeo buckle through it.
Ditch the "IB" entirely and just have Idaho Belt in a simple plain Font on the long hood.

There's also the thing where, depending on the origins of the line, i.e., which historic road name built it, or which descendant spun it off, the paint scheme might be an adaptation of a fallen flag scheme...

I've thought of that too, but haven't been able to create a suitable belt and buckle. Something big and cowboy would work.

Have you checked out the logos for the various Idaho state agencies?

I work for IDWR (http://www.idwr.idaho.gov/) and our logo could easily be modified to IBRR.  Unfortunately, the woman who designed our logo no longer works for us, so I cannot put you in touch with the designer.

How about MRL blue with an MILW orange stripe? That might look sharp.
