. . . unless you want to model an alternate reality of York, Pa if the Japanese had won WWII.

Is that before or after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?   :D

I really like that building on the left.  Cornice detail and dormers really set it apart.  Looks like it might be a station in the shot, but would also make a great library or city hall. Could you share its "parentage" or is is scratchbuilt?  Or maybe a Kibri or Faller kit that I have just never seen from that angle?

That's Lee's scratchbuilt model of the Western Maryland station in Cumberland, Maryland.  It's a gem.  Hopefully, he'll chime in with some details on its construction for you.

Thanks, Tom.
Yes, it's my scratchbuilt model of Cumberland Maryland's WM station.  I built it up from layers of sheet styrene, and had help with resin cast dormers from David K Smith, and the windows are computer cut paper that were done for me by the late, great Rob Madsen, aka Lord Zox.  I built up the interior with sheet styrene, and added LED lighting to finish it off.

You can see images of the construction here:

After I tore down the layout, I have it boxed up.  I'm working on plans for a series of modules to eventually take it on the road.

Lee, thanks for sharing the link to all those photos.  The interior is as impressive as the exterior. I am in the planning stages for a big station, and glad to have resources available from others who have tackled similar projects.

So, @dougnelson, what's the story with Lagunas Groceries?

Its the Lagunitas general store in Lagunitas, CA (Marin County).  The narrow gauge North Pacific Coast Railroad (later the Northwestern Pacific) arrived here around 1874 and the store was probably built around the turn of the century when Spanish Revival architecture was the rage.  The store is virtually unchanged.  It remains the center of activity in Lagunitas, which itself has changed little.  Its on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in rural western Marin, on the road to Pt. Reyes.  Great place to visit if you are in the SF Bay Area.

This photo is from around 1915.

This photo is circa 1919.

@Ed Kapuscinski : I want to point out that you could also do something like this:

I mean, this looks like the George Roberts Printing building with painted windows!

2. It's on every single layout. It's weird, I know, but having have worked in a hobby shop, and being in this stuff for so long, when I see a DPM building on a layout, my brain doesn't see "Surkowsky Sausage Mart", it sees "that's DPM 51600 again". It actually kinda sucks and makes this much more difficult than it should be!

I understand, but this is where you can modify the structure a bit, so it doesnt look like the ones on 50,000 other layouts - this is the reason I prefer kits to built ups.
