The drivers on that C12 are just too darn big - 55" if I converted them right off that page from 1400mm.
Unless Kato's version has very undersized drivers, it is just so much bigger than 44" I don't think you can
get away with it.  Wheelbase is 12'6", a full foot and a half bigger than the Bachman engine.

I'm sure it runs great... but those big wheels....

What about this one:

http://shop.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=265_372_632&products_id=4845

It's a smaller loco, the boiler has the right shape.  Heavy modifications to the boiler are needed obviously but that's the case anyway.

It's hard to find info on it.  It's not even listed in Bachmann's parts page.

It is an excellent locomotive.   It runs well through the speed ranges.  The pulling power is pretty good for its small size.

It comes with a factory decoder.   The tender is all wheels live.  You would have to modify the tender a bit.

I would recommend it to anyone.

Seriously look at the Kato c12. It is a 2-6-2 will all wheel pickup, even the two 2's pick up power.

I have the Micro Ace version of this thing.  The trailers are live, but the pilots are not.  It runs well enough, when it runs.   The presence of the traction tyres compromises the pick up to the point that it will stall, even on straight and level at anything less than thirty five SMPH.   If you add a tender, that adds pick up, which should address the stalling problem.   The Micro Ace comes with a neutral four wheel car that appears to be an auxiliary   coal tender.

Here are some crude measurements:

The idler wheels appear to be about thirty inches.

The drivers appear to be about fifty-eight inches.

Length over buffers appears to be about thirty-seven feet.

And, since the engine is most likely at the Japanese scale of 1:150, it gets even worse with the drivers scaling out at 58 1/2" and the driver wheelbase becomes 13' - 4" at a scale of 1:160.

Cheers,

Would you mind measuring the wheelbase and driver size?

The drivers are larger and farther spaced than the 2-6-2/0-6-0. I didn't measure but held the loco's side by side.

Well it looks like the Bachmann is the best choice then.

Thanks for comparing.

Would you mind measuring the wheelbase and driver size?

These measurements are crude:

Flange to flange from pilot to aft drivers:  twenty-six feet

Flange to flange, fore to aft drivers:  twenty feet

Driver size:  Sixty-three inches.

The driver size is standard road freight, but likely far too large for logging power.

Thanks for that. Nice to rule it out anyway so there is no question.

Hopefully the Bachmann on clearance at MB Klein has the newer motor. I took advantage of the sale and ordered one.  $69 shipped. Hopefully the exchange doesn't kill my good feeling!

Found these photos of the newest version (one with the smaller motor that does not stick out the back of the cab) Bachmann 2-6-0 Prairie on Spookshow's website.

This is a newer version than the one I purchased a year or two ago - probably worth having.  I wonder if perhaps they have made it more DCC compliant?  I cannot tell from most online listings which version they are selling.

Not likely; website specifies Rapido couplers and my version purchased two years ago has knuckle couplers.  Let us know in case I'm wrong!

Tim based on reviews I believe you are correct.  I e-mailed and asked to switch the order to the new one which they have for only $5 more.  It's listed as having the ez-mate couplers.  I should have been more diligent and surfed through the website more.  Oh well.

I can't find the new one - can you provide a link?  I am convinced that the Bachmann 2-6-2 will have to be the basis for the model and the question now is how to get the trailing truck moved in.  I would like to know if the newest iteration of the Bachmann 2-6-2 makes that easier.

This is the one that I asked them to change my order to. I guess I'll find out what version it is when I see it.
