Faux Rock

While I was at the local Habitat for Humanity Restore today, I found 3 boxes of faux rock that I thought would be a great alternative for realistic looking rock on a layout.  These  are used as a cheaper alternative to get a stone wall look on the exterior of your home.   They are very lightweight and come in several different sizes and textures as seen below.  They were only wanting a dollar for each but of course I talked myself out of the purchase by second guessing if I really needed them.  I may go back and buy the whole lot just because they were such a great deal.

Has anyone else used these on their layout?

I know everyone here is always looking for new and inexpensive ways to add scenes to their layout, so thought this would be worthy of sharing.  Not sure what these commonly go for retail, but thought these could be pretty convincing for rock cliffs.  They seemed to be made of some kind of light weight plaster and were colored very well.  Just something to be on the lookout for incase you happen to be at a similar location.  Never know what you'll stumble upon while you're out and about.   :)

Some of them have some nice structure, especially in the first photo.  That kind of sedimentary bedding is hard to replicate, and usually looks very unconvincing when carved.

While I haven't used anything like that, as I think they are still too heavy, I have used latex and gauze to mold some faces of rock and/or coal with nice texture to cast rock faces using plaster.
